Jammu and Kashmir Launches Legal Aid for Defence Personnel on Kargil Vijay Diwas

On July 26, 2025, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced the launch of the Veer Parivaar Sahayata Yojana 2025, a new legal aid initiative aimed at supporting both serving and retired defence personnel. This announcement coincided with the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day dedicated to honouring the sacrifices of Indian soldiers during the Kargil War in 1999.

Abdullah emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that defence personnel often face significant legal challenges due to their demanding service conditions and geographical constraints. He stated, “On the occasion of Vijay Diwas today, I would like to begin by remembering the services and sacrifices of our defence personnel… Our soldiers serve with dedication in challenging terrains.”

The Veer Parivaar Sahayata Yojana 2025 is designed to assist military members in navigating legal issues related to service disputes, pension matters, and civilian complaints. Abdullah pointed out that geographical distances and the dynamic nature of military deployments frequently complicate these challenges. He commended the Jammu and Kashmir State Legal Services Authority for its role in amending legal aid rules to encompass the needs of defence personnel.

Significance of Kargil Vijay Diwas

Every year, India commemorates Kargil Vijay Diwas to reflect on the nation’s pride and the valor displayed during the conflict. The day marks the successful conclusion of Operation Vijay, which saw Indian forces reclaim strategic heights from Pakistani intruders. This operation remains a significant chapter in India’s military history, characterized by effective political, military, and diplomatic actions.

The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), in collaboration with the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, officially launched the legal aid programme at the North Zone Regional Conference on “Reaffirming the Constitutional Vision of Justice for Defence Personnel and Tribals.” This event took place at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar.

The initiative reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that the legal rights of defence personnel are protected, addressing the unique challenges they face due to their service.
