In a significant development for Karnataka’s political scene, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar confirmed that the Congress party high command plans to summon him and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah “at an appropriate time” to discuss leadership matters. This statement comes amid growing speculation regarding power dynamics within the state’s ruling party.

During a press interaction on Saturday, Shivakumar indicated that the party leadership had communicated their intentions via phone. He stated, “They have conveyed this to us over the phone. We will go.” When asked if he and Siddaramaiah would travel together to meet the high command, Shivakumar affirmed that both leaders would attend, playfully noting, “Is it possible not to go there?” He assured reporters that he would keep them informed about the meeting.

Shivakumar is scheduled to be in Delhi on October 24, 2023, for a meeting organized by the Union Ministry of Water Resources concerning river interlinking initiatives. “I will attend that meeting and raise issues related to the Mahadayi project, the Krishna water award, the Mekedatu project, and the Upper Bhadra project,” he added. Furthermore, he mentioned plans to meet with the Union Minister for Water Resources and has sought appointments with both the Union Forest Minister and the Union Urban Development Minister. “I am meeting all of them in the interest of the state. There are many issues,” he explained, suggesting that he may also meet with the Prime Minister if necessary.

The leadership discussions gained traction following comments made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who asserted that there is no power-sharing arrangement and emphasized his commitment to serving a full term. “Chief Minister, the high command, and I are bound by a pact,” Shivakumar remarked, clarifying that internal discussions regarding a change in leadership had not occurred. Earlier, Siddaramaiah had confirmed in the Assembly that he would remain in office for the entirety of his term, stating, “I will continue as the Chief Minister in the future as well.”

As political dynamics evolve in Karnataka, the upcoming meeting with the Congress high command is expected to be pivotal in determining the future leadership structure of the party. With both leaders preparing for discussions in Delhi and addressing key state issues, the next steps are keenly anticipated by party members and citizens alike.
