Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) in Tirupati has initiated a five-day workshop focused on Biological Databases and Omics Tools, which commenced on October 13, 2023. This initiative is part of Team-II of the DBT-BUILDER Project (Level I) and aims to equip students with critical skills in modern biological research.

The workshop is designed to enhance students’ comprehension of how contemporary science investigates genes, proteins, and microorganisms using advanced technologies. A key focus is on Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE), a technique instrumental in bioremediation. DGGE enables scientists to identify microbial communities capable of cleaning contaminated soil and water, and it plays a pivotal role in early cancer detection by identifying genetic alterations associated with the disease.

Hands-On Training and Participant Engagement

Participants are also being trained in Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), a fundamental technique widely used in biotechnology, healthcare, and environmental research. University officials emphasized that these sessions are designed to bolster students’ research capabilities and prepare them for careers in emerging scientific fields.

On the first day, 140 attendees, including postgraduate students and research scholars from various departments such as Biotechnology, Applied Microbiology, M Pharmacy, and Biochemistry, engaged in practical training at the Omics Laboratory. This hands-on experience with PCR and DGGE equipment provided valuable exposure to real-time molecular analysis.

The workshop is being conducted under the guidance of several esteemed faculty members, including Prof A Sreedevi, the Principal Investigator, and Prof T Sudha, who attended the inaugural session as the chief guest. Other notable contributors include Prof P Uma Maheswari Devi (Co-Principal Investigator), Prof R Jaya Madhuri (Convener), Prof P Joshtna, and Prof P Usha.

Strengthening Research Skills for Future Careers

The workshop’s objective is to not only impart technical skills but also to inspire a deeper interest in scientific research among participants. By facilitating direct interaction with cutting-edge technologies, SPMVV aims to foster a generation of scientists who are well-prepared to tackle complex biological challenges.

The active participation of students and scholars highlights the growing interest in advanced biological studies, reflecting a broader trend towards integrating modern techniques into educational frameworks. As the workshop progresses, the emphasis will remain on equipping participants with the skills necessary for success in the rapidly evolving scientific landscape.
