Delhi Government Plans to Expand Districts from 11 to 13
The Delhi Government has announced a significant administrative restructuring that will increase the number of districts in the national capital from the current 11 to 13. This change, confirmed by officials on November 30, 2023, aims to enhance governance and make services more accessible to the public. Residents can expect to see new district names reflected in official documents following the completion of this proposal.
Details of the Proposed District Changes
The restructuring plan is prepared by the Revenue Department and introduces a new administrative map featuring the 13 proposed districts: Civil Lines, Karol Bagh, Rohini, Narela, Najafgarh, Sadar City, Keshavpuram, North Shahdara, South Shahdara, Central District, New Delhi, South District, and West District. This change moves away from the current directional naming convention, which predominantly uses geographic indicators such as East Delhi and South-East Delhi, towards more localized and descriptive names.
The rationale behind this realignment is to improve the efficiency of governance by synchronizing the administrative district boundaries with the respective zones of the Municipal Corporation. This alignment is anticipated to streamline administrative functions and ease public access to services.
Addressing Population Density and Administrative Efficiency
High-density areas, particularly in North-East and East Delhi, will see changes aimed at addressing population pressures. For instance, Shahdara is set to be divided into North Shahdara and South Shahdara, reflecting the need for more manageable administrative divisions.
In the historically significant New Delhi district, known as Lutyens Delhi, adjustments will be minimal. The district will maintain its overall structure while merging its subdivisions of Vasant Vihar with Najafgarh, leaving two subdivisions: Delhi Cantt and New Delhi.
The proposal, still in its draft stage, requires approval from the Delhi Cabinet and the Lieutenant Governor before it becomes operational. Once approved, the new district names will be officially recognized across various government documents, including voter lists, Aadhaar cards, and ration cards.
Officials assert that this administrative overhaul will increase the speed and transparency of governance, benefiting residents throughout the capital. The changes, aimed at enhancing local governance, will likely impact how residents engage with administrative processes in their daily lives.
