Trump Unveils $15,000 Visa Program for US Residency Ahead of Deadline

The U.S. government has revealed new details about the “Gold Card” visa program, which is set to launch by December 18, 2023. This initiative, championed by former President Donald Trump, allows foreign nationals to apply for permanent U.S. residency by making a substantial financial contribution. The program requires a donation of $1 million for individuals and $2 million for corporate applicants, along with a non-refundable application fee of $15,000.

The Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) have prepared a draft petition, known as Form I-140G, which applicants must submit as part of the process. This petition is currently under review by the Office of Management and Budget. The Gold Card visa program was initially announced amidst considerable fanfare, with administration officials suggesting they would sell 1,000 Gold Cards per day. However, the initiative lost momentum as the administration adopted stricter immigration policies.

Eligibility and Application Process

To qualify for permanent residency through this program, applicants must fit into one of two categories: the EB-1 preference category for individuals demonstrating extraordinary ability, or the EB-2 National Interest Waiver category. The application process entails filing with the Department of Commerce, followed by USCIS assessing the applicant’s eligibility, including verification that the funds used for the donation originate from lawful sources.

Once the petition is approved and an immigrant visa number becomes available, applicants will need to undergo consular processing at a U.S. embassy. If successful, they will receive an immigrant visa, allowing them to enter the U.S. as lawful permanent residents.

The program aims to attract foreign investment while providing a pathway to residency for eligible individuals. Proponents argue it will stimulate economic growth, although critics express concerns about the implications of selling residency status.

Platinum Card Program Overview

In addition to the Gold Card, Trump has proposed a separate initiative referred to as the “Platinum Card,” which requires a $5 million investment. This program would allow applicants to spend up to 270 days in the U.S. without incurring taxes on non-U.S. income. As of now, further details on the Platinum Card remain limited.
