Aston Martin and Hollywood Team Up for Adrian Newey Documentary
A new documentary focusing on renowned Formula 1 engineer Adrian Newey is officially in the works, as Aston Martin collaborates with Hollywood heavyweights Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Titled Turbulence: The Greatest Mind in Formula One, the film will explore Newey’s pivotal role at Aston Martin and his leadership during a significant regulatory overhaul affecting the sport.
The documentary is a joint venture involving Aston Martin Aramco, F1 Management, and various production companies, including Artists Equity, Whisper Group, and Mark Stewart Productions. It aims to highlight Newey’s impressive legacy, marked by an unprecedented 12 Constructors’ and 14 Drivers’ titles, particularly as he transitions to a new team months before a crucial regulations reset.
Affleck, representing Artists Equity, emphasized that the project will not be a conventional motorsport documentary. He described it as a portrait of reinvention, reflecting on Newey’s shift to Aston Martin after three decades of success at the forefront of Formula 1. In a statement to Variety, Newey expressed that the film will provide insight into the intense pressure and precision required in modern car design, particularly during this significant regulatory change.
Production Team and Creative Vision
The film will be directed by Patrick Mark and Michael Tolajian, with an executive production team that includes Affleck, Damon, and Kyle Wheeler from Artists Equity. They are joined by Brian Venturo and Stephen O’Connor, along with Whisper’s Drew Masters, Chris Grubb, Sunil Patel, Emma Everitt, and Mark Stewart. While the working title may change during production, the film’s primary goal is to delve into the mind behind some of Formula 1’s most successful machines and the high stakes surrounding Aston Martin’s ambitious plans for 2026.
The film also highlights the ongoing narrative of Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin’s prominent driver. At 44 years old, Alonso stands as the oldest and most experienced driver in the sport, with 415 starts. His unique position places him at the intersection of Formula 1’s evolving entertainment landscape, which has expanded significantly through initiatives like Drive to Survive and a wave of cinematic projects, including a recent record-breaking film starring Brad Pitt.
A Look Ahead at F1’s Future
Alonso recently attended a private screening of the Pitt film ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix and described the depiction of paddock life as impressively accurate. He appreciated the authenticity of the familiar faces portrayed on screen and commended the production’s two-year commitment to integrating with Formula 1. The balance between drama and realism in the film resonated with him, highlighting the growing intersection of sport and entertainment.
As production of Turbulence: The Greatest Mind in Formula One progresses, the documentary promises to offer a detailed examination of Newey’s contributions to the sport, the challenges faced by teams like Aston Martin, and the dynamic evolution of Formula 1 in the coming years.
