Son and Müller Clash in MLS Playoff Showdown This Weekend
The MLS playoffs reach a thrilling climax this weekend as LAFC faces off against the Vancouver Whitecaps, featuring two standout players: Son Heung-Min and Thomas Müller. Both players have made significant impacts since their midseason arrivals, showcasing their talents and enhancing their teams’ performances. The match, taking place on Saturday, promises to be a showcase of high-caliber soccer, highlighting why these players have thrived in a new league.
Son has made a remarkable impression at LAFC, netting 10 goals and providing four assists in just 12 appearances, including league and playoff matches. His presence has energized the LAFC fanbase, while Müller has also shone for the Whitecaps, contributing eight goals and three assists in nine matches. Both players embody the ideal of midseason signings, demonstrating adaptability and a drive to succeed in a competitive environment.
Success Factors for Son and Müller
The success of Son and Müller can be attributed to various factors beyond their evident skills. ESPN analyzed earlier this year why certain high-profile players adapt quickly to new leagues. Key elements include the ability to adjust to different playing styles, building relationships with new teammates, and possessing a strong desire to win. Both players have surpassed expectations, fitting seamlessly into their respective teams.
LAFC defender Ryan Hollingshead recalls the first time he met Son, describing the South Korean star’s enthusiasm and readiness to contribute. “I handed [Son] my weights and he said, ‘Let’s get to work,'” Hollingshead said. Son’s integration into LAFC’s counterattacking strategy has been pivotal. Coach Steve Cherundolo identified the need for an additional attacking option, and Son’s synergy with Denis Bouanga has proven lethal, with Bouanga scoring 13 goals since Son’s arrival.
Son’s attitude has also fostered a collaborative atmosphere within the team. Hollingshead noted that Son is demanding yet constructive, constantly seeking ways to improve team performance. “He’s the first one to push for things,” Hollingshead explained, highlighting Son’s commitment to teamwork.
Müller’s Adaptation and Team Spirit
Similar traits are noted by players and staff at Vancouver regarding Müller. Whitecaps manager Jesper Sørensen emphasized Müller’s humility and his focus on the team’s success. “He wants it to be about the Whitecaps with Thomas on the team, and not about Thomas and then with the Whitecaps in the background,” Sørensen stated. This team-first mentality has made it easy for teammates to embrace Müller.
Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter recalled how Müller reached out even before joining the team, expressing eagerness to collaborate. This early communication set a positive tone, reinforcing Müller’s desire to integrate seamlessly. Berhalter noted, “He doesn’t overthink things, he keeps it very simple,” which contributes to Müller’s effectiveness on the pitch.
Müller, who spent his career at Bayern Munich, acknowledged the challenges of transitioning to a new league. “I was not coming here for vacation,” he told reporters. “I wanted to do a serious job… You never know in a different country, different league, how long this process maybe will last.” His adaptable nature has allowed him to quickly find his footing within the Whitecaps.
The two players have faced each other nine times previously, with Müller holding an advantage of 6 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws. However, Son’s notable victory came during the 2018 World Cup, when he scored in South Korea’s 2-0 triumph over Germany, eliminating the defending champions.
As both teams prepare for this crucial playoff match, Cherundolo is acutely aware of the challenges posed by Müller. He described him as “one of the most intelligent players out there in the world,” praising his exceptional ability to read the game and make split-second decisions. “He doesn’t make mistakes,” Cherundolo noted, underscoring Müller’s remarkable technique and spatial awareness.
This weekend’s match will not only determine who advances in the playoffs but will also showcase the extraordinary talent of both Son and Müller. Their performances have captured the attention of fans across the league, and only one player’s dream season will extend beyond this weekend.
