Surge in Respiratory Infections Hits Nagpur Ahead of Diwali

As Nagpur prepares for the festive season, health officials are observing a significant increase in cases of H3N2 influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infections. Local pulmonologists report a surge in patients presenting symptoms such as persistent cough, throat irritation, fever, and breathing difficulties, all exacerbated by dust generated during pre-Diwali cleaning activities.
Dr. Akash Balki, a senior pulmonologist, noted that many individuals visiting outpatient departments are testing positive for either H3N2 or RSV. He explained, “This time of the year, we are seeing a sharp increase in patients complaining of respiratory issues. Both these viruses affect the respiratory tract, and the dust and chemical fumes during Diwali preparations make the symptoms worse.”
H3N2 is a seasonal flu virus that primarily impacts the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. Symptoms can include fever, body ache, sore throat, and fatigue. For vulnerable populations, such as those with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or weakened immune systems, H3N2 can lead to severe lung infections.
Similarly, RSV is a common virus that induces cold-like symptoms but can pose serious risks for young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised lung function. Dr. Balki elaborated on the seasonal nature of these infections, stating, “October to December is the time when seasonal viruses thrive, aided by fluctuating temperatures and air pollution. During this period, Diwali preparations also contribute to the problem.”
The dust created from cleaning old furniture, curtains, and shelves, combined with chemical fumes from wall paints, varnishes, and decorative materials, acts as a catalyst for viral infections and allergic reactions. Dr. Balki cautioned that even those who are generally healthy may experience allergic cough or sinus congestion during the cleaning phase. He emphasized the heightened risks for individuals with asthma or bronchitis, noting, “For those recovering from viral infections like H3N2 and RSV, this can lead to severe breathlessness.”
As the festive activities ramp up, health professionals urge the public to take precautions to mitigate the impact of these seasonal respiratory viruses. They recommend minimizing exposure to dust and fumes, maintaining good ventilation during cleaning, and seeking medical advice if respiratory symptoms arise.
With Diwali just around the corner, it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant about their health and well-being.
