Former Kenyan PM Raila Odinga Dies in Kerala at 80

Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga passed away on March 13, 2024, in Kerala, India, while undergoing Ayurvedic treatment. He was 80 years old and reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest during his morning walk at the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Hospital in Koothattukulam.
Hospital officials indicated that Odinga collapsed around 9:00 a.m. and was promptly transported to Deva Matha Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:52 a.m. “He was on his morning walk and suddenly collapsed. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, he could not be saved,” stated an official from the Ayurvedic facility.
Odinga had arrived in Kerala about a week earlier after receiving medical attention in Mumbai, where he was treated for multiple health issues. Accompanying him were his daughter, sister, and a personal doctor. Following his death, the body has been preserved at Deva Matha Hospital while officials coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Kenyan Embassy for further arrangements.
Political Legacy and Contributions
Throughout his political career, Raila Odinga played a significant role in shaping modern Kenyan politics. He represented the Langata Constituency in the Kenyan Parliament from 1992 until 2013 and served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013. His leadership was marked by his advocacy for multiparty democracy and constitutional reforms, notably leading protests for a new constitution in 2010.
Odinga was also the leader of the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition Party, a political entity that has been instrumental in Kenyan politics. His efforts in promoting democratic values and governance have left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
As news of his passing spreads, tributes from various political figures and citizens have begun to pour in, reflecting on his contributions to the country. His legacy will continue to influence future generations of Kenyan leaders and activists.
