Indian PM Modi Celebrates Release of Israeli Hostages, Supports Peace Efforts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his approval of the release of Israeli hostages on October 13, 2023. He credited the “unwavering peace efforts” of US President Donald Trump and the “strong resolve” of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the successful outcome following more than two years of captivity.
In a post on social media platform X, Modi stated, “We welcome the release of all hostages after over two years of captivity. Their freedom stands as a tribute to the courage of their families, the unwavering peace efforts of President Trump, and the strong resolve of Prime Minister Netanyahu.”
The announcement came after the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that all 20 remaining living Israeli hostages had been released by Hamas and returned to Israeli authorities. These individuals had spent over 730 days in captivity. IDF spokesperson Effie Defrin described the release as “a defining moment” for Israel, coinciding with the celebration of Simchat Torah.
India has maintained a consistent stance throughout the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, condemning the attacks on Israel that occurred on October 7, 2023, and the resulting civilian casualties. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reaffirmed India’s commitment to advocating for the release of all hostages, a ceasefire, and a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.
India’s diplomatic efforts have extended across various international platforms, including the United Nations, BRICS, and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Modi, along with the Minister of External Affairs, has engaged with multiple leaders from both Israel and Palestine to discuss the situation and promote peace.
The recent hostages’ release has been met with relief and celebrations in Israel, highlighting the importance of humanitarian efforts in conflict resolution. Modi’s remarks reflect India’s ongoing position of support for peace initiatives in the region, emphasizing the need for safe humanitarian assistance to affected areas.
As the situation evolves, India’s role in fostering dialogue and cooperation remains crucial in addressing the complexities of the Israel-Palestine conflict and ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected individuals.
