Mumbai Police Nab Man for Allegedly Duping Job Seeker of Rs 2 Lakh

A 40-year-old man was arrested by the Marine Drive Police in Mumbai for allegedly defrauding a resident of Satara out of Rs 2 lakh by falsely promising to secure a government job for his brother. The accused, identified as Himmatrao Nimbalkar, a resident of Phaltan in the Satara district, was taken into custody on Saturday.
Details shared by the police indicate that Nimbalkar met the complainant, a 32-year-old man, last year at the MLA hostel canteen in South Mumbai. During their encounter, he allegedly introduced himself as an employee at Mantralaya, the state secretariat, and offered to facilitate a job for the complainant’s brother as a peon at the Satara Sessions Court. He also claimed to have connections in the postal department for another potential job.
To bolster his claims, Nimbalkar allegedly presented a fake approval certificate and requested money to “process” the recruitment. Trusting his assertions, the complainant initially transferred Rs 20,000 through Google Pay and subsequently sent an additional Rs 1.8 lakh via bank transfer.
After months of inaction and no job offer, the complainant recognized the fraudulent nature of the arrangement and reported the incident to the Marine Drive Police Station. An FIR was filed in February 2023 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertain to cheating and forgery.
Following an extensive investigation, police traced Nimbalkar back to Satara and apprehended him. A police officer from the Marine Drive Police Station commented, “The accused had been absconding for several months. He allegedly posed as a government employee and used fake documents to convince victims.”
In addition to the charges in Mumbai, Nimbalkar faces another cheating case registered at Shivajinagar Police Station in Pune. The police are continuing their investigation to determine if there are additional victims who have fallen prey to similar scams.
