Kerala Offers Free Travel for Cancer Patients on KSRTC Buses

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has introduced a significant initiative aimed at supporting cancer patients. The program allows these patients to travel for free on KSRTC buses to receive medical treatments, including procedures at both private and public hospitals. This announcement was made by Transport Minister K. B. Ganesh Kumar during a session in the Kerala Assembly on October 9, 2025.
To take advantage of this offer, patients must provide a certification from their oncologist. This document should be presented to the KSRTC bus crew as proof of their medical condition. Minister Ganesh Kumar emphasized that this initiative represents a “sharply differentiated improvement” over a similar program initiated by the previous government in 2012, which only subsidized travel costs by 50% for cancer care.
Under the previous administration led by the United Democratic Front (UDF), subsidized travel was restricted to city and local buses. In contrast, the current Left Democratic Front (LDF) government has expanded the scope, enabling free travel not only on local services but also on Superfast, Deluxe, and air-conditioned buses, as well as long-distance and inter-State luxury coaches.
New Initiatives for Students and Facilities
In addition to the cancer patient initiative, Minister Ganesh Kumar announced plans to enhance travel convenience for students. A mobile application will soon be available, allowing students to obtain travel concessions easily. The requirement for students to renew their concession every year has been eliminated. Instead, students from Class 8 to 10 will only need to renew their concession tickets after transitioning to Plus Two courses. Degree students will receive a three-year concession card, simplifying the process considerably.
The government is also improving facilities for KSRTC passengers. Air-conditioned waiting rooms will be established, featuring special amenities for women and children. Enhanced security measures will include the installation of surveillance cameras in stage carriages and at bus stops and stations, aimed at ensuring passenger safety.
Enhancements in Infrastructure and Services
Minister Ganesh Kumar revealed plans to revitalize KSRTC depots by demolishing old structures and constructing new, modern facilities. These new depots will be designed to surpass existing standards, offering a welcoming environment comparable to swanky airports. The KSRTC will collaborate with the Sulabh Society, a non-profit organization, to maintain high-quality toilets, washrooms, and cloakrooms in these new depots.
Furthermore, KSRTC is committed to upgrading its fleet by introducing new air-conditioned buses, replacing older, polluting diesel vehicles. This initiative aims to expand services to underserved regions, particularly focusing on improving transport accessibility for marginalized communities, including forest tribes.
The Kerala government’s multifaceted approach illustrates its dedication to enhancing public transport services and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations, marking a significant step in health and social welfare within the state.
