Prime Minister Modi Commemorates RSS with New Rs 100 Coin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a special Rs 100 coin on October 1, 2025, marking the 100th anniversary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This commemorative coin features a striking image of Bharat Mata in a blessing posture on one side, while the other side depicts RSS volunteers bowing in respect. Crafted from pure silver, the coin also includes the RSS motto, “Rashtray Swaha, Idam Rashtraya, Idam Na Mama,” which translates to “all is devoted to the nation, all belongs to the nation, nothing is personal.” Modi also launched a commemorative postage stamp that showcases RSS volunteers participating in the 1963 Republic Day parade during the centenary celebrations in Delhi.
During the event, Prime Minister Modi referred to RSS shakhas as crucial platforms for character development, reflecting on his own experiences as a volunteer. His tribute has sparked reactions, particularly from the opposition Congress party, which has a long-standing history of criticism towards the RSS.
Congress Critiques RSS Amid Celebrations
While Modi praised the RSS for its contributions to nation-building, the Congress party issued a statement criticizing the organization. In a detailed article, Congress released a 560-word piece alongside a 66-second video, asserting that the RSS has a history of being anti-national. Political analysts note that Congress’s narrative often emphasizes selective historical events while overlooking instances of cooperation between the RSS and previous governments.
Historical Collaboration Between RSS and Congress
An analysis of historical records reveals that several leaders within the Congress party maintained working relationships with the RSS, despite ideological conflicts. Notably, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who once imposed a ban on the RSS, invited 3,000 RSS volunteers to the 1963 Republic Day parade, acknowledging their role during national emergencies.
Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi recognized RSS ideologue Veer Savarkar by issuing a postage stamp in his honor in 1970 and is said to have maintained cordial relations with RSS leaders. During the Emergency period, the RSS reportedly provided discreet support to her government.
Additionally, Lal Bahadur Shastri consulted with RSS chief MS Golwalkar during the 1965 India-Pakistan war, while Rajiv Gandhi engaged in secret discussions with RSS leaders like Balasaheb Deoras on key policy and electoral matters.
This historical context indicates that past Congress leaders viewed the RSS as a nationalist organization, even collaborating during critical national events. In contrast, the contemporary Congress party’s portrayal of the RSS as anti-national appears selective, omitting significant instances of cooperation that shaped India’s political landscape.
As the centenary celebrations continue, the dialogue surrounding the RSS and its historical ties to the Congress party underscores the complexities of India’s political narrative. The release of the commemorative coin and stamp has not only highlighted the RSS’s contributions but also reignited discussions about its role in India’s history and the ongoing political dynamics.
