Nirmala Sitharaman Visits Karur, Pledges Support to Victims’ Families

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited the site of a tragic stampede in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on October 9, 2023, where she met with the families of the victims. Accompanied by Union Minister L Murugan and Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran, Sitharaman offered condolences and assured the bereaved families of comprehensive assistance.

During her visit, Sitharaman spoke with relatives of the deceased, including Nagamani, the grandmother of five-year-old Pradeep, who lost his life in the incident. Nagamani described the meeting, stating, “She came to meet us. We told her we are in a very sad state. She advised me to take care of Pradeep’s mother, who still could not come out of her sorrow.”

In addition, Palaniammal, the daughter-in-law of another victim named Arakani, reported that both Sitharaman and Murugan reassured them of their support. They conveyed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also inquired about the situation following the tragedy.

The stampede occurred during a large gathering, leading to a chaotic scene that resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. As authorities work to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, the visit by Sitharaman underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of affected families.
