Mumbai’s Kumkum Archana Celebrates 75 Years of Devotion

The Parel Vibhag Sarvajanik Navratri Utsav Mandal in South Mumbai celebrated its milestone of 75 years with a grand observance of the Kumkum Archana ritual. This year’s event attracted over 600 women, marking the largest turnout in the mandal’s history. The Kumkum Archana, a one-day ritual dedicated to Goddess Durga, has become a defining element of the mandal’s Navratri festivities.

For more than two decades, the Kumkum Archana has served as a gathering for women of all ages, who come together to offer kumkum (vermilion powder) to the goddess. The ritual is performed alongside the chanting of 1,000 names of the goddess by a priest, creating an atmosphere of reverence and unity. The mandal’s celebration this year was particularly significant, as it coincided with the Amrit Mahotsav, commemorating 75 years of devotion and community spirit.

Celebrating Milestones and Community Spirit

Deputy Chairman of the mandal, Bharti Pednekar, emphasized the event’s depth, stating, “This celebration is not just about fun or food. It’s about true devotion to the goddess.” Participants had to register in advance, paying a fee of Rs 251 to take part in the ritual, while those without an idol could obtain one for Rs 401. The first session began at 11:00 and continued until 17:00, reflecting the meticulous planning involved in hosting the event.

The increase in participation over the years—from approximately 300 to 350 women in previous years to this year’s record—highlights the growing significance of the Kumkum Archana. Pednekar noted that the rising interest demonstrates the spiritual energy and unity the ritual fosters within the community.

Personal Experiences and Community Engagement

Attendees shared their heartfelt reflections on the spiritual atmosphere of the ritual. Sushmita Jhondhalekar, who has attended for seven years, remarked, “The festive spirit of Navratri is truly felt during this ceremony. It brings me immense peace and joy.” Another participant, Shrutika Salvi, expressed similar sentiments, stating, “Watching so many women come together in devotion is truly special. It’s not just a ceremony – it’s about carrying our culture forward.”

The significance of the Kumkum Archana ritual was further underscored by the presence of political leaders from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray). Sanjay Raut, a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, attended the event, acknowledging the unwavering faith women have in the mandal. He remarked, “Even in heavy rain, hundreds of women gathered for Kumkum Archana, showing steadfast devotion.” Raut highlighted the legacy of the founder, Balasaheb Thackeray, who empowered women through the “mahila aghadi” or women’s alliance.

Similarly, Arvind Sawant, a Lok Sabha MP, commended the mandal’s contributions to the community. He noted that the goddess has consistently blessed their political endeavors. “To us, this Devi is like a divine mother,” he stated. Sawant also addressed the current socio-political climate in Maharashtra, voicing concerns over unrest and division while calling for peace and unity.
