Regina Santos-Aviles, a staff member for Texas Representative Tony Gonzales, tragically died after suffering severe burns in her garden on September 13, 2023. According to firefighters, Santos-Aviles ignited herself with gasoline. Her family, however, insists that her death was accidental.

Emergency responders reported that they arrived at the scene in Uvalde shortly after 9:30 p.m. to find Santos-Aviles alive but severely burned. She was discovered by her mother, who witnessed the horrifying incident unfold. Firefighters noted the presence of gasoline cans at the scene and extinguished the flames before airlifting Santos-Aviles to a hospital in nearby San Antonio. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at 6:30 a.m. on September 14, as confirmed by the medical examiner’s office.

The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation. The Uvalde Police Department has stated that they do not suspect foul play and are awaiting results from the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Laboratory, which could take several weeks.

In a conversation with news outlet KSAT, they mentioned the availability of a water supply outside the residence, reinforcing their claim of an accident. A relative recounted her final words, stating, “I don’t want to die,” adding a poignant layer to the unfolding tragedy.

As the investigation continues, the Uvalde Police Department has indicated that they will not provide further details until the necessary reports are completed.
