Sukhbir Singh Badal Promises Flood Prevention Measures in Punjab

Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), announced a comprehensive flood prevention initiative on March 15, 2024, during a gathering in Tarn Taran. If re-elected, his government plans to construct concrete bundhs, or embankments, aimed at protecting agricultural land and vital infrastructure from flooding.
Addressing local farmers and supporters, Badal emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating, “We will construct concrete bundhs wherever needed to prevent the inundation of agricultural land and damage to vital infrastructure.” He expressed a strong commitment to eradicating the flood crisis that has affected the region for years.
In addition to flood prevention, Badal outlined other key priorities for his administration. He pledged to provide pucca houses for impoverished families currently living in kutcha houses. He also committed to reinstating social welfare programs, such as the Atta Dal and Shagun scheme, which had been discontinued by the previous Congress government.
During his visit, Badal made it clear that the needs of farmers remain a top concern. He stated, “All farmers who still do not have a tubewell will be given a tubewell connection within one month of the formation of the SAD government.” This promise aims to support agricultural productivity in the region.
Addressing Local Concerns and Criticizing the Opposition
Badal conducted eight booth-level meetings across five villages to rally support for Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, the party candidate for the upcoming byelections. He criticized the current Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann, alleging that Mann is more focused on publicity stunts than addressing the real challenges faced by farmers. “They want tractors, JCB machines, and sandbags. Instead, they are being offered a helicopter,” Badal remarked, referring to a recent event where Mann used a helicopter for promotional purposes.
Badal’s critique extended to Mann’s recent vacation, suggesting that his return to announce government measures was insensitive to the plight of flood-affected farmers. “CM Bhagwant Mann is sprinkling salt on the wounds of flood-affected farmers after returning from a two-day family vacation in Chennai,” he stated.
In urging voters to unite against the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Badal claimed these parties have regressed Punjab’s development. “This is the time to rise as one to strengthen the SAD, which alone can protect the panth and its institutions,” he said, calling for a collective response to restore the state’s prosperity.
Electoral Strategy and Community Engagement
Randhawa echoed Badal’s sentiments, urging constituents to create a strong wave of support for the SAD, emphasizing their ability to mobilize despite challenges. “We know how to fight against oppression, and I am confident the people of Majha will deal a resounding defeat to the AAP in the forthcoming by-elections,” she asserted.
The SAD’s electoral strategy focuses on grassroots engagement, with Badal and Randhawa actively participating in local meetings to address community concerns. Their approach aims to highlight the party’s commitment to farmers and infrastructure development, positioning the SAD as a viable alternative for voters disenchanted with current leadership.
As the byelections approach, the SAD is leveraging these commitments to galvanize support, promising tangible solutions to pressing issues while seeking to reclaim influence in Punjab’s political landscape.
