Karnataka SIT Intensifies Investigation into Alleged Mass Burials

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) established by the Karnataka government is intensifying its inquiry into allegations of “mass burials” in Dharmasthala, a town in the state. The probe, which began in response to serious claims involving potential mass murder and other crimes, saw significant developments over the weekend as investigators consulted with local authorities and scrutinized records related to missing persons.
On July 27, 2023, the SIT continued its investigation with a focus on a former sanitation worker who previously confessed to burying bodies in the area. This individual, who worked in Dharmasthala from 1995 to 2014, has alleged that he was coerced into burying numerous bodies, including those of women and minors. Some of these bodies reportedly displayed signs of sexual assault, leading to heightened concerns about the nature of the cases under review.
Leadership and Investigative Actions
The SIT, led by its chief, Pronab Mohanty, who is also the Director General of Police (Internal Security Division), has been actively overseeing the on-ground assessments. On-site evaluations were conducted as officers reviewed the progress of the investigation and engaged with local residents. The team includes Deputy Inspector General of Police M N Anucheth, along with IPS officers Soumyalatha S K and Jitendra Kumar Dayama. Additionally, twenty police personnel from Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada have been assigned to support the investigation.
The SIT has also revisited previous reports of suspicious deaths in the region. During these discussions, they have maintained direct communication with residents to gather more information about the allegations. Investigators have identified specific locations believed to be linked to the claims, which adds another layer of urgency to the ongoing inquiry.
Future Steps in the Investigation
As the investigation unfolds, further field visits, including technical and forensic surveys, are anticipated in the coming days. This comprehensive approach aims to uncover the truth behind the troubling allegations that have surfaced over the past two decades. The claims of potential mass burials have raised significant public concern, prompting the state government to take decisive action.
The SIT’s focus on detailed record examination and community engagement is intended to ensure that all aspects of the case are thoroughly addressed. As the inquiry progresses, officials emphasize the importance of gathering credible evidence to substantiate the serious allegations made by the former sanitation worker, who has also provided a statement before a magistrate regarding his claims.
The ongoing investigation highlights the state’s commitment to addressing these grave allegations while ensuring that justice is served. As the SIT continues to delve deeper into the situation in Dharmasthala, the community watches closely, hoping for clarity and accountability in the face of such serious accusations.
