Indian Army Launches Relief Operations in Flood-Hit Gurdaspur

The Indian Army has initiated extensive relief operations in the flood-affected regions of Gurdaspur district, providing essential aid to residents dealing with the aftermath of recent flooding. On October 23, 2023, Army medical teams established free medical camps in various villages to conduct health check-ups and distribute vital medications, aiming to mitigate the risk of waterborne and flood-related diseases.

In addition to medical support, the Army is also delivering vital relief materials, including food supplies, clean drinking water, and other necessities, to assist residents during this challenging time. The ongoing efforts have been met with gratitude from local authorities, including Dalwinderjit Singh, the deputy commissioner of Gurdaspur, who praised the Army’s significant contributions to the relief and rescue efforts in the area.

“Four dedicated Army teams have been working with great bravery and efficiency in Gurdaspur during the floods. Their support has significantly strengthened the district administration’s ability to respond effectively to this emergency,” said Singh.

Government Officials Assess Damage and Provide Support

In a related development, Harbhajan Singh ETO, a minister in the Punjab government, visited Marar village, where a massive crater measuring approximately 50 feet deep and 200 meters wide had formed due to land subsidence. Local residents successfully filled the crater with the assistance of the Army and other volunteers.

Singh also inspected erosion damage in Kiriyaan village, where he assessed the impact on local farmers and their livelihoods. He was accompanied by senior officials, including Basant Garg and Deputy Commissioner Rahul.

In Pathankot, several villages in the Bamiyaal and Narot Jaimal Singh areas have suffered extensive damage from the floods. Residents reported significant losses to livestock, homes, and crops, with many having taken loans of Rs 50,000 each to invest in their harvests. The flooding has left these individuals in a precarious financial position, as they now face challenges in repaying their debts.

Government’s Commitment to Affected Residents

During his visit to Moge Wala deras near Tass village, Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak addressed the community’s grievances. He emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting all flood-affected individuals, stating, “This is a natural calamity, and no one is to blame for it. The Punjab government stands firmly with every flood-affected person. Extending help in this hour of crisis is our foremost duty.”
