Heavy Rain Floods Dubai, Disrupts Flights Across UAE
Intense rainfall has inundated several low-lying neighbourhoods in Dubai, causing significant disruption across the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The heavy downpour, which began on March 15, 2024, led to flooded streets, stranded vehicles, and widespread delays in air travel.
In Dubai, areas such as Karama and Al Barsha experienced severe flooding as hours of continuous rain overwhelmed drainage systems. Reports indicate that emergency services were deployed to assist residents and manage the waterlogged conditions. Similar situations were observed in other emirates, including Sharjah, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah, where traffic slowed considerably due to the adverse weather.
Air travel faced significant challenges as well. Major airlines, including Emirates and flydubai, cancelled or rescheduled numerous flights due to the severe conditions. Dubai Airports confirmed that while operations had largely returned to normal, passengers should expect potential delays and are advised to check their flight status with airlines prior to heading to the airport.
Continued Weather Warnings and Public Safety Measures
The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) forecasts that this unusual weather pattern will persist, with continued rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, and reduced visibility expected in the coming days. The NCM also warned of rough sea conditions along the coast, urging the public to exercise caution.
In response to the severe weather, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) recommended that private sector companies in affected areas implement remote working arrangements. Authorities in Abu Dhabi suspended community events, while adventure activities at Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah were temporarily halted to ensure public safety.
The UAE typically enjoys a desert climate, characterized by minimal rainfall and high temperatures, even during winter months. Annual precipitation is usually low and concentrated in sporadic bursts, making the current prolonged rainfall an unusual event. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and stay updated through official channels and emergency alerts.
As the nation grapples with these rare weather conditions, authorities continue to prioritize safety and public well-being, emphasizing the importance of following official advisories.
