Karnataka Launches Biodiesel Pumps to Boost Eco-Friendly Fuel
In a significant advancement for renewable energy, the Karnataka State Bioenergy Development Board has announced plans to establish biodiesel fuel pumps at the taluk level in collaboration with private companies. This initiative aims to promote the use of biodiesel, a cleaner alternative produced from cooking oil, oil seeds, and other eco-friendly agricultural materials.
The board will support private firms by facilitating the necessary permissions from government agencies and assisting in marketing efforts. Despite a surge of interest from businesses—over 70 applications currently pending approval at various district offices due to procedural complexities—the recent introduction of the ‘Karnataka State Biodiesel (B-100) Blending with High Speed Diesel for Transportation Purposes (Licensing) Order, 2025’ aims to streamline the process.
Addressing Concerns and Expanding Access
S E Sudheendra, chairman of the Karnataka State Bioenergy Development Board, emphasized the need for more companies to participate in this initiative. He noted, “We want more companies to come forward and set up pumps. Though there is a stock of biodiesel and many are ready to sell it, there were procedural problems in setting up such pumps, which has been addressed with the notification.”
The price of biodiesel is projected to be at least ₹5 per litre lower than conventional diesel. Sudheendra expressed optimism that further resource augmentation could lead to even lower prices. However, some consumers have raised concerns about the potential impact of biodiesel on vehicle engines and fuel efficiency.
Bharath Subramaniam, advisor to the chairman, reassured the public that only B100 biodiesel, which has been internationally tested and approved for automotive use, will be sold at these pumps. “Hence, people can opt for it without any fear,” he stated.
Market Dynamics and Environmental Benefits
While there is a robust supply of biodiesel in Karnataka, much of it is currently sold to oil companies that blend it with regular diesel. An industry insider pointed out that although these companies benefit from the cost savings of blending, they often do not pass these savings on to consumers. “It is important to break this monopoly and allow producers to sell biodiesel directly to the public so that everyone can benefit,” the source added.
Biodiesel not only offers a cleaner-burning fuel option but also reduces pollution and dependence on oil imports, aligning with national energy goals. The Union government has been advocating for increased biodiesel usage, recognizing its potential to enhance energy security.
Karnataka was a pioneer in adopting a bioenergy policy back in 2007-2008, which later informed the Union government’s National Bioenergy Policy published in 2017. With the new licensing order and an increasing interest from the private sector, the state is poised to lead the way in promoting sustainable energy solutions.
As the biodiesel initiative unfolds, stakeholders and consumers alike will be watching closely for its impact on the market and the environment.
