AAP’s Raghav Chadha Critiques Toll Plaza Operations in Rajya Sabha
In a recent session of the Rajya Sabha, AAP MP Raghav Chadha expressed serious concerns regarding the operations of toll plazas across India, characterizing them as “legalised loot.” Chadha highlighted the financial burden placed on citizens through various taxes, including Goods and Services Tax (GST), road tax, and fuel levies, while pointing out that road infrastructure remains inadequately maintained.
Chadha’s remarks come amidst growing frustration from the public over long wait times at toll booths. He noted that commuters often endure queues lasting between 30 to 40 minutes, which not only wastes fuel but also leads to significant loss of productivity and time. He emphasized that the current state of toll operations fails to justify the costs incurred by road users.
Calls for Regulatory Changes
In his address, Chadha referenced rulings from the Kerala and Jammu & Kashmir High Courts, which state that tolls should not be imposed on incomplete or poorly maintained roads. He argued that such legal precedents should guide government policy, ensuring fair treatment for all commuters.
To address these issues, Chadha proposed a new regulation that would grant free passage to any commuter who waits longer than five minutes at a toll booth. This measure, he argued, would not only alleviate some of the burdens faced by road users but also encourage better management of toll facilities.
Chadha’s call for reform resonates with a broader public demand for improved infrastructure and service quality. He underscored the need for a more equitable approach to toll collection, urging the government to prioritize the interests of the average citizen in its transportation policies.
As discussions around toll operations continue, Chadha’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among lawmakers and citizens alike that change is necessary for the future of India’s roadways. The AAP’s stance may prompt further debates on transportation infrastructure, taxation, and public service accountability in the coming weeks.
