Son Heung-min Joins LAFC in Record MLS Transfer Deal

Son Heung-min has officially joined Los Angeles FC (LAFC) in a landmark transfer, marking a significant moment in Major League Soccer (MLS) history. The former Tottenham Hotspur captain made a grand arrival in Los Angeles, receiving an enthusiastic welcome from fans on both Tuesday and Wednesday. His transfer, valued at a record USD 26.5 million, comes with a three-year contract that includes options extending into 2028.
The excitement for Son’s arrival was palpable as he attended LAFC’s Leagues Cup match against Tigres on Tuesday evening, witnessing his new team secure a 2-1 victory from a suite at BMO Stadium. Fans erupted in cheers as he was introduced, demonstrating the impact he is expected to have on the club. On Wednesday, he participated in a press conference where he expressed his enthusiasm for joining LAFC and his admiration for the city.
Factors Influencing Son’s Move
Son cited several reasons behind his decision to move to LAFC. He praised the club’s general manager, John Thorrington, for playing a crucial role in his choice. “He changed my heart, he changed my brain,” Son remarked, highlighting the persuasive discussions that led him to believe Los Angeles was the right destination for his career.
Another significant factor was the vibrant Korean community in Los Angeles, which numbers around 320,000. “As a Korean, to know that Koreatown here in Los Angeles has so many Koreans, I’m very proud to be a part of the club and the city,” he said through an interpreter. Son expressed his commitment to making the community proud with his performances on the field.
Additionally, Hugo Lloris, a former teammate at Tottenham and current LAFC goalkeeper, contributed to Son’s decision-making. Lloris shared insights about the benefits of living and playing in Los Angeles, further enticing Son to make the move.
A Stellar Career and Future Aspirations
During his decade-long tenure at Tottenham, Son scored an impressive 173 goals across all competitions. He made history as the first Asian player to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot award during the 2021-22 season. Prior to his time in the Premier League, he played for Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga from 2013 to 2015.
Now, at 33 years old, Son is eager to continue his successful career in MLS. After receiving his P-1 visa, he is expected to make his debut in Chicago on Saturday. Reflecting on his age, Son stated, “I think we can say I’m old. But I still have good physicality, good legs, and still I have good quality.” He emphasized his determination to win, promising fans an exciting performance and a commitment to success with LAFC.
Son Heung-min’s move to LAFC not only represents a new chapter in his illustrious career but also signifies the growing allure of MLS as a competitive league attracting top international talent. With a record transfer and the backing of a passionate fan base, Son’s arrival is set to energize both the club and the league.
