Shalina Sayer Secures Bronze at KIUG 2025, Celebrates Identity
Shalina Sayer, representing the Siddi community and Karnatak University, clinched a bronze medal in the women’s 57kg freestyle wrestling event at the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) on November 30, 2025. This significant achievement took place at Lohagarh Stadium in Rajasthan, highlighting both her athletic prowess and the importance of inclusivity in sports.
In a tense final group bout, Shalina triumphed over Bhanu from Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, Haryana, with a score of 2-1. Her success is particularly meaningful, as it symbolizes the ongoing efforts towards inclusivity within the sporting community, especially for marginalized groups like the Siddi.
A Journey Reflecting Resilience
Shalina’s path to the podium was fraught with challenges. The team embarked on a three-day train journey to reach the event, which she described as arduous but ultimately rewarding. “We came here by train, which took us three days. So, the journey was really challenging. But now that I have won, all that doesn’t matter. I would say it was worth all the effort,” she stated.
Training for a decade in wrestling, Shalina expressed her joy at earning her first medal at the Khelo India University Games, having previously competed in the Khelo India Youth Games. “I had come with a lot of hope. I knew I would win a medal, though I was not sure what colour it would be. I am very happy to win the medal,” she remarked, sitting alongside Ismail, the head of the Karnatak University contingent.
Community Significance and Personal Experiences
Shalina’s achievement resonates deeply within the Siddi community, which traces its roots to Africa and has become a vital part of India’s cultural landscape. Many Siddis are recognized as Scheduled Tribes in various states, underscoring the importance of representation in sports.
While challenges such as discrimination based on skin colour persist in many regions of India, Shalina reflected on her own experiences growing up in Dharwad. “I will be very honest, I have not had any such experiences. In fact, I get respected a lot because of my sporting background. People see me as an achiever,” she shared, adding that her sister is also a policewoman, further amplifying their family’s positive public image.
During her conversation, Shalina highlighted another notable figure from her community, Sushil Motesh Kambrekar, a player in the Pro Kabaddi League. “Siddis are doing well. He is such a big inspiration to the entire community. I have never met him but I hope I make my name like him and make everyone proud,” she stated, illustrating the supportive network within the Siddi community.
Shalina’s bronze medal not only adds to her accomplishments—she previously secured a bronze at an All-India University competition earlier this year—but also reinforces the mission of the Khelo India initiative to promote inclusivity in sports. Her story serves as a beacon of hope and determination for aspiring athletes from marginalized backgrounds, encouraging them to pursue their dreams against all odds.
