India’s cricket team secured a thrilling victory against South Africa by 17 runs in Ranchi on October 18, 2023. The match marked the first of the series, with Virat Kohli earning the title of ‘Player of the Match’ for his impressive century. Kohli’s performance not only helped to clinch the win but also addressed ongoing speculation regarding his future in the sport, particularly in relation to the upcoming 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.

India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, praised Kohli’s hard-hitting century, suggesting that there is “no question about anything” regarding his long-term future with the team. Kotak highlighted Kohli’s remarkable form and fitness, noting that the player demonstrated skills reminiscent of his earlier career. “It was an outstanding knock; he took responsibility and batted really well,” Kotak stated during a pre-match press conference. He added that Kohli’s back is fine, dismissing concerns about his health and emphasizing the player’s exceptional performance.

Kohli’s century contributed significantly to India’s total of 349 runs, which proved to be a formidable target for South Africa. The innings featured notable partnerships, including a pivotal 136-run second-wicket stand with Rohit Sharma, who scored 57 runs. Despite a middle-order collapse where India lost three wickets quickly, Kohli found support in KL Rahul, who contributed 60 runs, and Ravindra Jadeja, who added 32 runs.

In response, South Africa struggled initially, losing three quick wickets and finding themselves in a precarious position at 11 runs for three wickets. A fighting partnership between Matthew Breetzke and Tony de Zorzi brought some stability, but South Africa faced another setback when they lost crucial wickets to Kuldeep Yadav, who turned the tide in India’s favor with timely dismissals.

Kotak acknowledged the impact of the dew in the second innings, which made batting conditions easier. “After so much dew, the bowler cannot keep the ball in his hand properly,” he explained, praising young pacer Harshit Rana for taking three wickets in the powerplay. Rana’s early strikes were instrumental in maintaining pressure on the South African batting lineup.

Despite a spirited effort from Corbin Bosch, who scored 67 runs, South Africa ultimately fell short of the target, ending their innings at 332 runs. The match concluded with India leading the series 1-0, setting a promising tone for the upcoming games.

Kohli’s performance, alongside the contributions from his teammates, not only secured the victory but also reaffirmed his place within the team as they build towards future tournaments. With coach Kotak expressing confidence in both Kohli and Sharma, the Indian cricket team appears well-prepared for the challenges ahead, including the much-anticipated 2027 World Cup.
