Afghanistan Withdraws from T20I Series After Paktika Attack

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Tri-Nation T20I Series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. This decision follows a tragic incident in which three young Afghan cricketers were killed during an attack in the Urgun District of Paktika Province. The ACB condemned the violence, referring to it as a cowardly act attributed to the Pakistani regime.

In a statement, the board expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying, “The Afghanistan Cricket Board expresses its deepest sorrow and grief over the tragic martyrdom of the brave cricketers from Urgun District in Paktika Province, who were targeted this evening in a cowardly attack carried out by the Pakistani regime.” The ACB characterized the event as a significant loss for Afghanistan’s sporting community and extended condolences to the families of the victims.

The three cricketers, identified as Kabeer, Sibghatullah, and Haroon, were returning home from a friendly match in Sharana when the attack occurred. They had attended a local gathering when they were targeted. The incident not only claimed the lives of these players but also resulted in the deaths of five other civilians from Urgun District, while seven more individuals sustained injuries.

Community Reaction and Support

Senior Afghan cricketers have voiced their support for the ACB’s decision to withdraw from the series. Rashid Khan, a prominent player, condemned the attack as “absolutely immoral and barbaric.” Another player, Fazalhaq Farooqi, expressed solidarity with the ACB’s stance, emphasizing that national dignity must take precedence over all else during this difficult time.

On March 15, 2024, airstrikes carried out by Pakistan in Paktika province exacerbated tensions, breaking a 48-hour ceasefire agreement between the two nations. These strikes reportedly targeted residential areas in the Urgun and Barmal districts. Prior to the attacks, Pakistan had sought to extend the ceasefire until talks in Doha aimed at de-escalating tensions and preventing further violence were concluded.

The ACB’s decision to withdraw from the tri-series, which was scheduled to take place in Rawalpindi and Lahore in April 2024, underscores the ongoing challenges faced by athletes in regions affected by political strife and violence.
