DRDO Enhances Astra Mark 2 Missile Range Beyond 200km

The Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is advancing its efforts to extend the range of the Astra Mark 2 air-to-air missile beyond 200 kilometers. This development aims to enhance India’s capabilities in beyond visual range (BVR) air combat, as reported by ANI. The Indian Ministry of Defense is expected to discuss the acquisition of approximately 700 Astra Mark 2 missiles shortly, according to defense sources.

The Astra Mark 2 will be integrated into the fleets of the Sukhoi fighter jets and the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). This integration is set to provide Indian pilots with the ability to engage adversaries from significantly greater distances than previously possible. Initially, the missile’s range was capped at around 160 kilometers, but the new enhancements will position India among a select group of nations with such advanced BVR capabilities in the region.

Significant Upgrades and Partnerships

The Astra Mark 2 is an upgraded version of its predecessor, the Astra Mark 1, which featured a range of over 100 kilometers and incorporated an advanced guidance and navigation system. This latest version represents a substantial leap in technology, reflecting the DRDO’s commitment to developing indigenous long-range air-to-air missiles.

To bring the Astra Mark 2 from concept to deployment, the DRDO has collaborated with over 50 public and private organizations, including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). As regional aerial threats continue to evolve, the development of these advanced missiles has become a critical focus for India. The extended range of the Astra Mark 2 is expected to deliver a strategic advantage during aerial engagements, allowing pilots to counter threats while maintaining a safe distance from enemy aircraft.
