Young Candidates Energize Sarpanch Elections in Adilabad District
In a notable shift in local politics, young and educated individuals are stepping forward to contest the upcoming sarpanch elections in various locations across Adilabad district. This trend is marked by a significant increase in participation from educated women, with many families encouraging their daughters to enter the political arena. On March 2, 2024, a large number of candidates submitted their nominations, indicating a highly competitive environment.
The sarpanch elections have attracted considerable attention in major gram panchayats like Utnoor and Indravelli. Among the candidates is Banoth Kaveri, who holds a BSc in agriculture and is currently preparing for civil services. Her father, local leader Gajanand Naik, has actively encouraged her to participate, emphasizing the importance of educated youth in politics for societal development.
In Indravelli mandal, a unique situation has arisen with three brothers competing against one another for the Emayikunta gram panchayat. Former sarpanch Lakhan Singh and his brothers, Kubher Singh and Anar Singh, have all filed nominations, showcasing a rare familial rivalry.
Notably, the Heerapur gram panchayat has seen both a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law, Thodasam Laxmi Bai and Thodasam Maheshwari, entering the race for the sarpanch position. This incident highlights the evolving dynamics of family involvement in local governance.
In another significant move, former Utnoor ZPTC member Charulatha Rathod from the BRS party has announced her candidacy for the sarpanch post in Utnoor. Her experience in local governance could have a substantial impact in this competitive election.
The nomination process on Saturday was marked by long queues at various centers, particularly in Utnoor and Ponkal in the Jannaram mandal of Mancherial district. To manage the overwhelming turnout, officials issued tokens to the candidates and their supporters, with some places expected to continue the process well into the night.
This increase in participation from the educated youth and women in the sarpanch elections signifies a broader engagement with local governance and reflects a growing trend towards political involvement among younger demographics. As the election date approaches, the competition is expected to intensify, promising a dynamic electoral landscape in Adilabad district.
