Sikh Community Seeks Resolution on Calendar Disputes Ahead of Celebration

As the Sikh community in Punjab prepares to celebrate the Parkash Purab of Guru Gobind Singh on December 27, 2023, a long-standing debate regarding the use of the Nanakshahi Calendar has resurfaced. This year, the birth anniversary coincides with the Shaheedi Saptah, a week of solemn remembrance for the martyrdom of the Guru’s four sons and his mother, Mata Gujri.

The overlap between these two significant observances raises questions among community members about which event to celebrate. The Shaheedi Saptah traditionally begins on December 22, and Sikh scholars have noted that this situation has recurred every three to five years since the introduction of the Nanakshahi Calendar in 2003.

Historical Context of the Calendar Debate

This recurring dilemma stems from the combination of the lunar calendar used for Gurpurabs and the solar calendar for Sangrands, leading to periodic overlaps. Sikh academics emphasize that this conflict is not new. Similar situations were noted in 2010, 2017, and 2022, prompting Sikh leaders to seek clarity from the Akal Takht Sahib, the highest temporal authority in Sikhism.

The last week of December is typically reserved to honor the martyrdom of Guru Gobind Singh’s elder sons, Sahibzada Ajit Singh and Sahibzada Jujhar Singh, as well as the younger Sahibzadas, Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh. According to the lunar calendar, the Parkash Purab falls on Poh Sudi Seven, which corresponds to December 27 this year, thus directly overlapping with the days of remembrance.

Call for a Definitive Resolution

Gurcharanjit Singh Lamba, a Sikh scholar based in the United States, explained that before the adoption of the Nanakshahi Calendar, Sikh religious dates were determined using two natural time-keeping systems: the lunar for Gurpurabs and the solar for the start of months. This method effectively avoided confusion for centuries.

Lamba pointed out that past calendars, such as the SGPC calendar for 2017-2018, had placed the martyrdom days between December 22 and 27, while the Parkash Purab occurred on December 25, creating similar overlaps. In response, the Akal Takht had advised the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) not to alter the Guru’s birth date.

He further emphasized that overlap should not lead to confusion within the community. “In Sikhism, there is no sorrow or happiness,” Lamba stated, noting that the same religious observances are performed during both the Parkash Purab and the martyrdom days.

Despite directives from the Akal Takht reaffirming traditional dates, some factions within the community continue to push for a fixed date for Guru Gobind Singh‘s birthday, which Lamba argues cannot align with the lunar-solar system.

Community leaders are now calling for a definitive and binding resolution from the Akal Takht Sahib. They advocate for the adoption of a consistent method for all Sikh dates to alleviate ongoing confusion.

The increased observance of the Shaheedi Saptah across the community has amplified the need for clarity and unity. “Those repeatedly attempting to disrupt Gurpurab dates are harming community unity,” Lamba remarked. “This issue must be resolved permanently with strict enforcement of Akal Takht Sahib’s decisions.”

As the date of celebration approaches, the Sikh community looks to its leaders for guidance to navigate this complex issue and ensure a harmonious observance of both significant events.
