Nitish Kumar Rejects ‘Topi’ at Event, Hands It to Minister Zama Khan

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar sparked controversy during a recent event in Patna by refusing to wear a traditional Muslim cap, known as a ‘topi.’ The incident occurred at the centenary celebration of the Madarsa Education Board on March 15, 2025, when Minister Zama Khan attempted to place the cap on Kumar’s head. Instead, Kumar redirected the gesture, placing the cap on Khan’s head instead.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, and Kumar’s actions have drawn significant attention as they come in the lead-up to the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar. The refusal to wear the cap is particularly noteworthy given its association with the Muslim community, which constitutes approximately 18 percent of the state’s electorate.
RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari criticized Kumar’s behavior, describing it as “inappropriate.” This incident highlights the intricate relationship between politics and community identity in Bihar, especially in a state where religious and communal dynamics play a crucial role in electoral outcomes.
Earlier in the day, tensions rose at the event as a group of Madarsa teachers protested, claiming they had not received their salaries for an extended period. This backdrop of discontent among educators further complicates Kumar’s political landscape as he prepares for the elections.
Kumar’s previous appearances have included wearing the traditional cap at similar Muslim events, but he has recently opted for alternatives, such as a scarf or kafiya. This shift in behavior may reflect a strategic political decision as Kumar navigates his party’s position ahead of the elections.
As the political climate in Bihar evolves, Kumar’s actions and their implications will likely be closely scrutinized by both supporters and critics alike. The upcoming elections are set to test the strength of his leadership and the influence of communal identities in the state’s politics.
