Jaishankar Highlights India’s Growing Global Influence at Convocation
India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, addressed the evolving dynamics of global power during his speech at the 22nd convocation of Symbiosis International (Deemed University) in Pune on March 15, 2024. He emphasized that a significant transformation is occurring in the global economic and political hierarchy, with power becoming more diffuse across various nations rather than concentrated in a few.
Jaishankar articulated that India’s increasing relevance on the world stage is largely attributed to its human capital, which he described as a vital source of national influence. He stated, “No country, however powerful, can impose its will on all issues anymore,” reflecting a shift towards more collaborative international relations. The minister noted that India is now perceived “more positively and more seriously” than in previous decades.
The transformation in India’s global perception stems from two key elements. First, there is a burgeoning recognition of India’s national brand, and second, the growing credibility of Indians as professionals in various sectors. Jaishankar highlighted that members of the Indian diaspora are frequently acknowledged for their disciplined approach, strong technological skills, and a family-oriented social outlook.
“India today is perhaps defined more than anything else by its talent and skills,” Jaishankar remarked, underscoring how these attributes have become central to India’s international identity. He pointed out that India’s global engagement reflects increased confidence and capability, distinguishing the country from others whose influence is primarily determined by trade or investment.
Manufacturing and Services: A Unified Approach
In his address, Jaishankar also tackled the longstanding debate surrounding the relationship between manufacturing and services. He argued that these sectors should not be viewed in isolation. For India to maintain its significant economic growth, a robust manufacturing base is essential. This foundation will not only adapt to technological advancements but will also cultivate an industrial work culture that enhances the services sector.
As incomes rise and public expectations evolve, there will be a growing demand for professionals across a spectrum of fields. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of various roles, including teachers, researchers, historians, artists, and sportspersons, in addition to traditional professions such as engineers and doctors.
He noted that the number of higher education institutions in India has approximately doubled over the past decade, but further expansion and quality enhancement are necessary to meet future demands.
Globalisation and Economic Shifts
Jaishankar addressed the complexities of globalisation, suggesting that countries which made prudent policy decisions following decolonisation are now more prosperous. He contrasted this with certain regions in the Western world, where decades of offshoring production, lifestyle decisions, and demographic challenges have eroded competitiveness. This scenario has contributed to a perception of stagnation, which carries significant political implications.
He concluded that the cumulative effects of these global trends have led to a notable shift in the international economic and political landscape. As India continues to expand its influence, its human resources are poised to play an increasingly critical role in shaping the future of global affairs.
