In a remarkable celebration of cultural heritage, a total of 7,009 women gathered at the Chandi Baruah Stadium in Howly, Assam, on August 24, 2023, to perform ‘Thiyo Naam.’ This impressive gathering set a new state record in the Assam Book of Records while also attempting to establish a world record. The event was organized by the committee of the 97th Howly Raas Mahotsav, highlighting the importance of this traditional folk devotional song-and-dance form from Lower Assam.
Thiyo Naam was performed in unison by women representing 12 districts in the region. The initiative aimed not only to showcase this unique cultural tradition but also to preserve it for future generations on a global platform. The grand performance stemmed from nearly five months of dedicated practice and preparation, demonstrating the commitment of the participants.
Honoring a Cultural Icon
The event gained an emotional depth as it coincided with the commemoration of the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, a beloved figure in Assamese culture. The gathering paid tribute by collectively singing his timeless classic “Manuhe Manuhor Babe,” a powerful anthem celebrating humanity that resonated with the audience and participants alike.
Assam Cabinet Minister Ranjit Kumar Dass expressed his admiration for the event, stating, “This is my first time witnessing such a massive Thiyo Naam performance. I thank all the naamotis and the organizing committee for making this event possible.” His remarks echoed the sentiments of many present, emphasizing the significance of preserving local traditions.
Distinguished Guests and Community Spirit
The event attracted several dignitaries, including BTR EM Gautam Das, Dr. Babul Chandra Das of Borpetaa Satra, Nirmal Adhikari of Sundaridiya Satra, and Dharmeswar Adhikari of Moinbori Satra. The presence of these influential figures underscored the importance of cultural unity in the region.
The Howly Raas Mahotsav Committee, led by chief organizer Hemen Das, played a crucial role in coordinating this impressive gathering. The event not only celebrated the rich cultural tapestry of Assam but also fostered community spirit and camaraderie among participants.
The successful performance of Thiyo Naam marks a significant milestone in Assam’s cultural landscape, reinforcing the importance of tradition in a rapidly changing world. As the participants left the stadium, they carried with them a sense of pride and connection to their heritage, ensuring that this event will be remembered for years to come.
