New Book Chronicles Marthanda Varma’s Rise in Travancore

A new book titled God’s Own Empire, authored by Raghu and Pushpa Palat, delves into the remarkable life of Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the 18th-century ruler who played a pivotal role in shaping the history of Travancore. Born in 1706, Marthanda Varma emerged as a significant figure at a time when his kingdom was beset by internal strife and external threats.

In his youth, Marthanda Varma was deeply troubled by the decline of royal authority and the disintegration of his kingdom. By the age of 14, he expressed his desire to restore the dignity of the Crown, confronting the king directly. His reign would later prove his vision correct, as he undertook a transformative journey to reinforce the monarchy’s power against the influence of priests and nobles.

Marthanda Varma recognized the Ettuveetil Pillamar (nobles) and the priests as principal adversaries to royal authority.
