Delhi Government Unveils ‘Pink Saheli Smart Card’ for Free Travel

The Delhi government introduced the much-anticipated ‘Pink Saheli Smart Card’ on November 2, 2025, aimed at facilitating free and seamless travel for women and transgender individuals within the city. This initiative allows eligible passengers to travel without charge on the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses, significantly enhancing public transport accessibility.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the launch of the smart card through a post on social media platform X, stating, “The Delhi government has launched the ‘Pink Saheli Smart Card’ for women and transgender.” This new card is part of a broader effort to improve public transport for women, ensuring a secure and efficient travel experience.

Details of the Pink Saheli Smart Card Initiative

According to an official statement, the Pink Saheli Smart Card will be issued under the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) framework. This card allows for free travel exclusively on DTC and cluster buses while also offering the capability to recharge for use on other transit services. To qualify for the digital card, applicants must be residents of Delhi aged 12 years or older, with valid proof of residency.

The DTC had previously issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the empanelment of banks to facilitate the issuance of smart cards for public transport. This arrangement is set to last for five years, enabling a streamlined process for card distribution.

Card Features and Registration Process

The personalized smart card will include the cardholder’s name and photograph, ensuring proper identification. Not only does it provide free travel on DTC and cluster buses, but it also allows users to top up their cards for paid travel on other transport modes, enhancing the convenience for commuters.

Online registration for the Saheli Card is currently available on the official website of the Delhi government and the dedicated Saheli Card portal. This initiative aims to replace the existing paper-based slips provided by bus conductors, thereby increasing transparency and accountability in the subsidy program.

Currently, the DTC offers free bus travel to women, regardless of their residency status. The new digital system is designed to improve service for approximately 2.9 million daily bus travelers in Delhi, providing a more organized and efficient method of accessing public transport.

Officials emphasize that the Pink Saheli Smart Card not only simplifies travel for women and transgender commuters but also aligns with modern digital practices. By allowing users to recharge their cards for various transport options—including the Metro—the initiative brings a level of uniformity and ease to daily commutes across the city.
