Union Health Minister Nadda to Lead World AIDS Day 2025 Observance

Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda will spearhead the national observance of World AIDS Day 2025 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on December 1, according to an official statement. This significant event will gather senior officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, including the Secretary, Additional Secretary & Director General of the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), and the Director General of Health Services. Their presence reaffirms the Government of India’s commitment to strengthening the national response to HIV prevention, treatment, care, and stigma elimination.

The observance, organized by NACO, aims to unite government leaders, development partners, youth representatives, community advocates, individuals living with HIV (PLHIV), and frontline health workers in a collaborative effort to accelerate India’s progress towards ending AIDS as a public health threat. A youth-led flash performance will take place to emphasize the significance of awareness and responsible behavior regarding HIV/AIDS.

Following the performance, a thematic exhibition will be inaugurated, showcasing digital innovations, program achievements, and community-led initiatives implemented under the National AIDS and STD Control Programme. The exhibition will feature stories from beneficiaries and an audio-visual presentation highlighting India’s advancements under NACP-V, alongside upcoming priorities.

A special live musical performance will also be part of the event, focusing on themes such as early testing, treatment adherence, and living with confidence while managing HIV. This multifaceted approach aims to engage various stakeholders and enhance awareness around the ongoing challenges and achievements in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

According to data from the Health Ministry, India has made significant strides in combating HIV from 2010 to 2024. During this period, the country achieved a 48.7% decline in annual new HIV infections, an 81.4% reduction in AIDS-related deaths, and a 74.6% decline in mother-to-child HIV transmission. These figures underscore the effectiveness of ongoing public health initiatives and the collective efforts of various organizations and communities.

World AIDS Day serves as a platform for individuals and organizations worldwide to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, fostering solidarity in addressing the pandemic. This day provides an opportunity for public and private partners to amplify discussions surrounding the status of the pandemic, highlighting the need for continued progress in prevention, treatment, and care globally. It has evolved into one of the most recognized international health observances, dedicated to raising awareness, commemorating those lost to the disease, and celebrating successes such as improved access to treatment and prevention services.
