Isabgol Outshines Chia Seeds as the Ideal Gut Health Booster
Recent discussions around dietary fiber have led to increased awareness among Indians about their daily intake, particularly in light of common digestive issues such as bloating and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). While chia seeds have become a popular choice for fiber, Dr. Shubham Vatsya, a gastroenterologist at Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj, Delhi, has brought attention to Isabgol, also known as psyllium husk, as a superior alternative.
In a viral Instagram Reel, Dr. Vatsya described Isabgol as the “everyday gut hero,” emphasizing that many consumers are more focused on imported superfoods and fail to recognize the benefits of local options. He stated, “If Isabgol were marketed in India as well as chia seeds were, then half the bloating and gut issues of the Indian population would vanish.”
A significant difference between the two options lies in their fiber content. According to Dr. Vatsya, chia seeds contain only 10% soluble fiber, while Isabgol boasts an impressive 70-80% pure soluble fiber. He highlighted the effectiveness of Isabgol in promoting digestive health, explaining that it forms a fiber gel within the gut that aids digestion, enhances bowel regularity, and soothes the gut lining.
Dr. Vatsya elaborated on the additional advantages of Isabgol, stating, “It helps nourish good gut bacteria, keeps you full for longer, and supports cholesterol and blood sugar balance by slowing down glucose absorption.” He added that psyllium acts as a powerful prebiotic, increasing the levels of bifidobacteria in the gut. These beneficial bacteria are essential for digestion, infection prevention, and the production of vital compounds like B vitamins and healthy fatty acids.
Medical professionals often recommend that IBS patients incorporate Isabgol into their dietary routines. Dr. Vatsya advised that just one to two spoons of Isabgol mixed with water or yogurt can help meet hydration needs while providing substantial health benefits.
While many social media users expressed agreement with Dr. Vatsya’s assertions about Isabgol’s advantages over chia seeds, some cautioned that psyllium husk is not intended for daily consumption. One user suggested, “Taking Isabgol every day is not ideal. It is better to consume it once a week or once every 10 days.” They also noted the numerous health benefits of chia seeds, which are rich in fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, protein, calcium, and antioxidants.
Another user raised a valid point regarding the consumption of Isabgol, highlighting the importance of knowing the right method of intake. “Isabgol can cause issues if not consumed properly. One should know when to take it with milk, water, or yogurt,” they noted, emphasizing the need for proper guidance in its use.
As the conversation around dietary fiber continues to evolve, it is clear that both Isabgol and chia seeds have their unique benefits. However, the insights provided by Dr. Vatsya shine a light on the potential of Isabgol, encouraging individuals to consider it as a primary source of dietary fiber for optimal gut health.
