Fatal Collision in Pune Highlights Traffic Safety Concerns

A traffic accident in Pune on December 10, 2023, resulted in the death of a 45-year-old casual worker, Anteshwar Govind Sonkamble. The incident occurred at approximately 18:15 local time at 509 Chowk in Vimannagar, where a bus collided with the motorcycle on which Sonkamble was a passenger.

According to Sub-Inspector Kantilal Gund from the Airport police station, the motorcycle was being operated by a co-worker of Sonkamble’s, who took a prohibited U-turn to save time. This maneuver led to the motorcycle being struck from behind by a bus travelling towards Vimannagar.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Following the collision, Sonkamble sustained severe internal injuries and was promptly transported to Sassoon General Hospital. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The police have initiated a legal case against both the motorcycle rider and the bus driver for rash and negligent driving.

Gund noted, “The motorcycle rider broke a traffic rule by making an illegal U-turn. The bus driver, on the other hand, could have been more alert.” The investigation included reviewing footage from nearby CCTV cameras, which helped clarify the sequence of events leading up to the accident.

The police’s findings highlight the urgent need for increased awareness and adherence to traffic regulations, particularly in busy areas like Vimannagar. This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers posed by reckless driving and the importance of road safety for all commuters.
