Ambulance Staff Arrested for Abandoning Injured Man in Prayagraj

Two ambulance service employees were arrested in Prayagraj for allegedly abandoning an injured man, leading to his death shortly after. The incident occurred on July 31, when the man, whose identity remains unknown, was found lying unconscious near a community health centre in Alamchandra village. He died the following day while receiving treatment at SRN Hospital.

According to Kaushambi Superintendent of Police, Rajesh Kumar, a local watchman notified the police about the unconscious man near Pulia Road. Responding promptly, local authorities transported him to Manjhanpur District Hospital due to his critical condition. Medical staff there assessed the injuries and referred him to SRN Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed.

An investigation led by a joint team from the Special Operations Group and the Kaushambi police included reviewing CCTV footage and tracking mobile call details. This effort resulted in the arrest of the two ambulance employees, identified as Naresh Kumar and Ashish Mishra, near Sayyad Sarawa Road.

Police officials indicated that the ambulance crew had failed to fulfill their responsibilities. Instead of taking the injured man to a medical facility, they abandoned him near Pulia Road. Both employees confessed during questioning that they received a call on July 31 regarding an unconscious individual near Mundera Mandi Road. The crew initially responded by heading to a nearby 100-bed hospital, but they turned back, fearing that there would be no doctors on duty and that the hospital staff might refuse admission due to the absence of an attendant.

Upon realizing they might encounter a similar situation at the Alamchandra community health centre, the ambulance crew made the decision to leave the injured man unattended near Pulia Road before departing the scene. Following their abandonment of the victim, someone subsequently dialed emergency numbers 108 and 112, prompting police intervention to transport the man to Manjhanpur District Hospital.

The case has drawn serious attention, and Kaushambi police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the ambulance employees under applicable legal provisions. The incident raises significant concerns about the accountability of emergency medical services and their duty to provide care to those in need. The investigation continues as authorities seek to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
