69-Year-Old Woman Thrives After Innovative Leadless Pacemaker Implant
A 69-year-old woman from Tollygunge, known as Sunita Roy (name changed), has successfully recovered after receiving a leadless pacemaker at Manipal Hospital in Mukundapur, part of the renowned Manipal Hospitals Group in India. This innovative procedure addresses her recurring fainting spells, which had significantly impacted her quality of life.
Under the expert guidance of Dr. Soumya Patra, Consultant and Incharge of Cardiology, the leadless pacemaker was implanted without the need for traditional surgical leads or a chest pocket. This minimally invasive approach not only reduces recovery time but also lowers the risk of infection, making it a safer option for long-term cardiac management.
Sunita’s medical history complicated her treatment; she suffered from severe pancytopenia, a condition characterized by a deficiency of all blood cell types due to liver cirrhosis and hypersplenism, which is an overactive spleen that destroys blood cells. These factors placed her at high risk for conventional pacemaker implantation. Further cardiac evaluations revealed sick sinus syndrome, an irregular heart rhythm that necessitated permanent pacing support.
Given her health challenges, Dr. Patra recommended the leadless pacemaker as a safer alternative. He noted, “This was a difficult case since the patient had severe pancytopenia, which raised the risk of bleeding and other issues to a great extent. Under such circumstances, a traditional pacemaker would have been risky. The sutureless, minimally invasive leadless pacemaker provided a much safer and more patient-friendly option.”
The procedure itself was performed without complications, and Sunita was discharged the very next day. Dr. Patra emphasized the advantages of this cutting-edge technology, stating, “It is most rewarding to note how such technology can really make a difference, particularly for patients with complicated medical conditions.”
Reflecting on her experience, Sunita expressed gratitude for the support she received. “I had been fainting often for quite a while. When I went to Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur, the doctors examined my condition and informed my family and me about the need for a pacemaker. They advised the leadless pacemaker as the safest course considering my complications. I am really thankful to all the staff at Manipal Hospital for offering me a second chance in life. I could go home the very next day, feeling fit and relieved.”
This case illustrates Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur’s commitment to integrating the latest advancements in medical technology, ensuring patient-centered cardiac care even in challenging situations. The successful implantation of the leadless pacemaker not only highlights the hospital’s expertise but also showcases the potential for improved outcomes for patients with complex health profiles.
