Renovation of Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor’s Homes Begins in Pakistan

The restoration and conservation of the ancestral homes of iconic Indian actors Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor has officially commenced in Peshawar, Pakistan. On July 18, 2023, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government confirmed the start of renovation work, which aims to preserve these significant cultural landmarks.
In July, the provincial government allocated Rs 33.8 million (over Rs 3 crore) for the initial phases of this project. According to the Director of Archaeology, Dr. Abdus Samad, the comprehensive restoration will require an estimated total investment of Rs 70 million (approximately Rs 7 crore). The project is expected to be completed within two years.
Aims of the Restoration Project
The renovation project seeks to restore both properties to their original condition, ensuring that the historical and aesthetic elements of these buildings are preserved. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Archaeology Department plans to transform the ancestral homes into museums dedicated to the lives and careers of both actors, allowing visitors to appreciate their contributions to the film industry.
These historic buildings were designated as national heritage sites by former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on July 13, 2014. Dr. Samad emphasized that the primary objective of the restoration is to safeguard the province’s rich historical and cultural heritage. He noted that this initiative will not only enhance local tourism but also create new job opportunities within the region.
Local tourism is expected to receive a significant boost from this project. According to Zahid Khan Shinwari, the provincial government’s Advisor for Tourism, “With the support of the World Bank, these projects will revolutionize the tourism sector in the province.” He expressed a vision for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s cultural landmarks to become a focal point for tourists from around the world.
As this restoration project progresses, it stands as a testament to the importance of cultural preservation and the potential for heritage tourism to contribute to the local economy. The homes of Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor will not only serve as a tribute to their legacies but also as a means to engage future generations with the rich cultural tapestry of the region.
