Pahlaj Nihalani Questions Vivek Oberoi’s Career Amid Controversy
Former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief Pahlaj Nihalani has reignited his long-standing feud with actor Vivek Oberoi, questioning the latter’s film career during a recent discussion regarding the controversial film Udta Punjab. Nihalani’s comments come at a time when Oberoi’s latest release, Kesari Veer, has underperformed at the box office, prompting further scrutiny of his career trajectory.
In a recent interview, Nihalani criticized Oberoi for his views on digital freedom, labeling them as hypocritical. “Is he even getting films anymore?” Nihalani asked, casting doubt on Oberoi’s relevance in the current film landscape. He pointed out the disparity between Oberoi’s public statements advocating for artistic freedom and the actor’s apparent absence from prominent film projects.
The Udta Punjab controversy, which arose in 2016 over censorship issues, remains a significant touchstone in discussions about film regulation in India. Nihalani, who oversaw the CBFC during that period, continues to assert that his decisions were in line with protecting the interests of Indian cinema. He suggested that Oberoi’s criticism stems from a place of frustration over his dwindling opportunities in the industry.
Meanwhile, Oberoi’s recent project, Masti 4, is reportedly in development, although details about its release remain sparse. The actor’s previous film, Kesari Veer, failed to resonate with audiences, further complicating his status in a competitive film market.
Nihalani’s remarks reflect ongoing tensions within the Indian film industry, particularly regarding the balance between creative expression and regulatory oversight. As the debate over digital content continues, the future of actors like Oberoi, who are navigating changing public perceptions and industry dynamics, remains uncertain.
In an industry where success can be fleeting, the fallout from this exchange may serve as a cautionary tale about public persona and career longevity. As both figures continue to shape the narrative in their respective roles, it will be interesting to see how their careers evolve in the coming years.
