The construction of a model house for survivors of the devastating Mudakkai-Chooralmala landslide in Wayanad is set to be completed within a month. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the construction five months ago, marking a significant step towards providing permanent shelter for those affected by the disaster. Currently, painting work is in progress, and if weather conditions remain favorable, the house will be ready for occupation by the end of this month.

As the first anniversary of the landslide approaches, which resulted in the tragic loss of 298 lives, the state government is also making rapid progress on a larger township project aimed at helping survivors. Located at Elston Estate, the initiative will see the construction of 410 houses to accommodate 1,662 people across five designated zones. These homes are designed not only for comfort but also to withstand future natural disasters, featuring a robust foundation that allows for potential expansion.

Each single-story house spans 1,000 square feet and includes essential living spaces such as a master bedroom, two additional rooms, a sitting area, a living room, a dining area, a kitchen, and storage facilities. Beyond individual homes, the township will incorporate public infrastructure, including roads, a health centre, an anganwadi (child care centre), a public market, and community centres.

The health centre will be well-equipped, featuring a laboratory, pharmacy, and examination rooms, along with facilities for outpatient services. The planned market will offer a variety of shops and stalls, an open market area, a children’s play area, and parking spaces. Community centres will provide recreational facilities, including a multipurpose hall, library, sports club, and open-air theatre, enhancing the social fabric of the new township.

Construction of the township began on April 11, 2023, immediately following the acquisition of land at Elston Estate. In response to the disaster’s impact, the state government has distributed financial assistance of Rs 6 lakh each to families of 220 victims, totaling Rs 13.21 crore from the state disaster relief fund and the Chief Minister’s relief fund. Additionally, emergency posthumous financial assistance of Rs 10,000 was provided to 1,036 families, amounting to Rs 1.03 crore.

This initiative not only aims to rebuild homes but also to restore hope and community for those who suffered unimaginable losses during the landslide. As the completion date for the model house approaches, the government’s commitment to supporting the survivors remains steadfast.
