CPI Conference Demands Unity Against Centre’s Financial Restrictions

The Communist Party of India (CPI) held a State conference in Alappuzha on September 11, 2025, where leaders called for a united front to oppose the Union government’s financial restrictions. The conference highlighted the perceived discrimination in financial aid, particularly in the wake of the deadly landslides in Wayanad in 2024. CPI leader and Agriculture Minister P. Prasad addressed the media, emphasizing that the Centre’s refusal to provide financial support to Kerala exemplifies ongoing biases in disaster assistance.
Prasad criticized the Union government’s actions, stating that while it imposed limits on foreign aid intended for Kerala, it simultaneously amended laws to allow states like Maharashtra to accept such assistance. He expressed pride in Kerala’s ability to enhance its own revenue despite these financial constraints. “Greater attention should be given to addressing the needs of the marginalized sections,” he stated, as he underscored the importance of prioritizing development projects supported by the Left Democratic Front.
The conference also reflected on rising attempts to instigate communal divisions within Kerala’s population. Leaders called for a robust response to both majority and minority communalism, advocating for new legislation aimed at curbing superstition and other social issues. The discussions included input from seventeen delegates from various districts, who contributed to the political report presented by CPI State Secretary Binoy Viswam.
Following the discussions, National Executive member K. Prakash Babu addressed the delegates, offering insights in response to the political report. On the final day of the conference, Viswam is expected to respond to feedback regarding the organisational report. At 15:00, a volunteer parade will commence from Muppalam in Alappuzha, culminating in a public meeting at Alappuzha beach, which will be inaugurated by D. Raja, the CPI General Secretary.
The conference serves as a platform for the CPI to solidify its stance on critical issues affecting Kerala and to galvanize support for its political agenda in the face of perceived federal neglect.
