BJP Criticizes Rahul Gandhi After Afridi’s Praise on TV

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a strong critique of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following remarks made by former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi during a television discussion. Afridi praised Gandhi while criticizing the current Indian government, prompting a backlash from BJP representatives.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla took to social media to express his disapproval, stating that individuals who harbor anti-India sentiments are aligning with Gandhi and the Congress party. Poonawalla remarked, “After Hafiz Saeed, now anti-India Shahid Afridi has praised Rahul Gandhi. There is nothing surprising in this. All those who hate India are teaming up with the Congress and Rahul Gandhi.” He further claimed that the Congress party has a longstanding relationship with Pakistan, citing its opposition to the abrogation of Article 370 and its perceived leniency regarding incidents like the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Pulwama, and the Pahalgam attack.
Sharp Criticism from BJP Leaders
Another BJP leader, Pradeep Bhandari, echoed Poonawalla’s sentiments, highlighting Afridi’s comments as indicative of Congress’s stance against Indian interests. Bhandari stated, “When India’s enemies praise Congress, people must realize that Congress is standing against India.”
During the television segment, Afridi expressed his views on the Indian government, asserting, “This government in India always stays in power by using the Hindu-Muslim card. This is a very negative mindset. It will continue as long as they remain in power.” He acknowledged Gandhi’s perspective, saying, “Of course, there are some good people among them. For example, Rahul Gandhi has a very positive outlook and believes in dialogue.”
These remarks triggered a wave of criticism from BJP officials, who interpreted Afridi’s endorsement of Gandhi as a concerning alignment with figures they associate with anti-India rhetoric. The BJP’s response reflects ongoing tensions in Indian politics, particularly regarding the narratives surrounding national identity and foreign relations.
The exchange has highlighted the increasingly polarized nature of political discourse in India, with leaders from both sides emphasizing their positions on nationalism and international relations. As the political landscape continues to evolve, statements from public figures like Afridi will likely remain contentious among Indian political circles.
