MLA T.S. Srivatsa inaugurated the Gandhi Shilp Bazaar on the evening of September 20, 2023. This exhibition and sale of handicrafts and handloom products is organized by JSS Mahavidyapeetha and supported by the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The event is taking place at the JSS Mysuru Urban Haat in Hebbal, Mysuru.
The Gandhi Shilp Bazaar aims to promote traditional crafts and provide artisans with a platform to showcase their work. With a focus on quality and sustainability, the bazaar features a diverse range of products, including textiles, pottery, and jewelry, all crafted by local artisans. This initiative not only supports local economies but also raises awareness about India’s rich cultural heritage.
Event Details and Objectives
The bazaar will be open to the public daily from 10:30 AM to 9 PM until September 21, 2023. Visitors can explore a variety of stalls displaying unique handicrafts and handloom items, providing an opportunity to purchase authentic products directly from the makers.
According to M. Shivananjaswamy, Project Officer at JSS Mysuru Urban Haat, the initiative is designed to empower artisans by providing them with direct access to consumers. He emphasized the importance of preserving traditional crafts and the role they play in sustaining local communities.
Support and Collaboration
In attendance at the inauguration were notable figures including K. Dhanarajan, Deputy Director of the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), based in Chennai, and A. Rakesh Rai, Coordinator of JSS Mysuru Urban Haat. These officials highlighted the collaborative effort between the government and local organizations to foster an environment where crafts can thrive.
The Gandhi Shilp Bazaar serves as a vital link between artisans and consumers, facilitating a better understanding of the craftsmanship involved in each product. It also aims to create a sustainable market for handicrafts, which have faced challenges due to modernization and changing consumer preferences.
As the event progresses, it is expected to draw significant attention from both locals and tourists, providing a vibrant showcase of India’s handicraft industry. The initiative is a step towards not only promoting traditional arts but also ensuring that these crafts continue to be a vital part of India’s economic landscape.
