Elphinstone Bridge Closure Delayed Pending Rehabilitation Plan

The future of the Elphinstone Bridge remains uncertain as authorities have decided not to close or demolish the structure until a formal rehabilitation plan is established. This decision comes from a meeting involving local residents, representatives from the Mumbai Police, and civic officials, which took place on Thursday. The discussions were prompted by growing tensions between residents and civic authorities regarding the bridge’s fate.

The Elphinstone Bridge, a vital connection between Parel and Elphinstone Road, has faced scrutiny due to its deteriorating condition. Reports indicate that the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, previously assured residents that no demolition would commence until rehabilitation plans for residents from 19 affected buildings were finalized. This assurance was crucial in response to protests that erupted in April 2023 when the Maharashtra Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) first announced the potential closure.

On Wednesday night, local residents expressed their discontent with the plans, leading to a protest that heightened community anxiety. The situation escalated following the sudden installation of road diversion boards near the bridge, which signaled imminent demolition and traffic management efforts. The boards reportedly intensified fears among locals, prompting immediate action from the police.

In light of the protests, the Bhoiwada police convened a meeting with MMRDA and traffic officials to address community concerns regarding the diversion boards and the timing of their installation. The police questioned why such measures were taken before a comprehensive decision on rehabilitation had been reached. Following intense pressure from the community, officials ultimately decided to remove the diversion boards.

As discussions continue regarding the bridge’s future, residents remain vigilant about assurances made by the state government. The Elphinstone Bridge, constructed during the British era, serves as more than just a transportation link; it represents a significant aspect of local history and community identity. The outcome of this ongoing dialogue will be critical for both the residents impacted by the proposed changes and the broader transportation network in Mumbai.
