Amazon Tightens Work Culture with New Phone Usage Rules

Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, has introduced new regulations regarding work phone usage as part of a broader push to tighten company culture and enhance productivity. This initiative, which comes in the wake of a return-to-office mandate, aims to increase accountability among employees, particularly within the company’s cloud division, AWS (Amazon Web Services).
Under these new rules, employees must now report their work phone usage, detailing the percentage dedicated to personal versus work-related tasks to qualify for a monthly reimbursement of $50. Retail staff are also required to submit detailed outlines of expected goals and projected returns for business trips, along with itemized meal expenses. According to a report from Business Insider, this level of scrutiny exemplifies a significant shift in Amazon’s approach to employee management.
In a memo dated June 17, 2025, Jassy emphasized the need for what he described as “owners” within the organization. He stated, “What would I do if this was my money?” and underscored that the most effective leaders are those who “get the most done with the least amount of resources required to do the job.” This perspective reflects a growing trend among major corporations to implement stringent measures aimed at controlling costs in the aftermath of extensive expenditures during the pandemic.
Employees have expressed concerns that these changes represent an increase in micromanagement, particularly amid widespread anxiety regarding job security in light of advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Jassy has previously warned staff to either adapt to AI technologies or risk losing their jobs, asserting that the company may require fewer employees moving forward. In a stark message, he noted, “We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today,” while encouraging employees to engage with AI through workshops and training.
As Amazon continues to navigate the evolving landscape of work culture, these recent directives signal a commitment to efficiency and cost management, even as they raise questions about employee morale and job security. Jassy’s leadership style, marked by a focus on accountability and resourcefulness, is shaping the future of one of the world’s largest companies.
The scrutiny of employee activities is not unique to Amazon, as many firms re-evaluate their operational strategies following years of pandemic-induced spending. The emphasis on productivity and efficiency is becoming a hallmark of corporate America, as businesses seek to streamline operations and enhance profitability in a rapidly changing environment.
