Women Share Insights on Menopause Over Coffee and Cuisine

A group of four women gathered recently to discuss the challenges and experiences of menopause while enjoying a meal together. This informal meeting provided a space for candid conversations about the physical and emotional impacts of this significant life transition.
As they sat around a table filled with various dishes, including a popular chicken tikka, the discussion quickly turned to the often-taboo topic of menopause. One woman, wearing striking red lipstick, spoke first, reflecting on the discomfort associated with the changes in her body. “I should not have had it. But, isn’t it delicious? All these spices burn in my stomach. What time has come? Food no longer offers comfort, only irregular spasms,” she lamented.
Another participant, who opted for coffee instead of food, noted, “It’s all menopause; the devil it is. We lose everything, don’t we? Digestion, metabolism, beauty, and of course, brains. My gynecologist tells me that I suffer from brain fog.” Her comment elicited nods of agreement from the others, with one adding, “What is this brain fog?”
The women shared their experiences of memory lapses and mental fogginess that can accompany menopause. “It’s like a cloud forming inside the brain, and one just feels stuck. How can you forget why you entered the room?” one remarked, recalling a recent incident where she struggled to remember the name of a colleague.
Another woman chimed in, expressing frustration at the emotional volatility associated with menopause. “Isn’t it all about hot flashes and mood swings? Just yesterday, I reprimanded my children for no reason. I become the apocalypse in the house,” she said, conveying the overwhelming feelings that often arise during this life stage.
The conversation took a more reflective turn as the women considered the sacrifices they made for their families. “We got married, had babies, and sacrificed every bit of our soul to raise them. What did we get in return? Not even a pat on the back,” one woman expressed, questioning the societal expectations placed on mothers.
Despite the heavy topics, there were moments of levity. One woman shared her experience with hormone replacement therapy, specifically estrogen patches. “I am on hormones. The anxiety that climbed mountains has been salvaged. I no longer feel like a pantomime of rebuttals,” she stated, highlighting the positive impact of her treatment.
Another participant expressed her desire to embrace this new phase of life, stating, “Whatever fog I am in, I somehow feel liberated. A life not punctuated by crimson flow, only a full stop.” This sentiment resonated deeply with the group, who found empowerment in their shared experiences.
As the discussion drew to a close, the atmosphere lightened. The woman in red lipstick concluded, “I will be on a khichdi diet and soup for the next two days. The weight gain, I need to watch out.” Laughter erupted, a refreshing reminder of their resilience and camaraderie.
This gathering not only provided a platform for discussing the realities of menopause but also fostered a sense of community among the women. They left the table with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to navigate this journey with understanding and support from one another.
In a world where conversations about menopause are often shrouded in stigma, these women demonstrated the importance of openness and solidarity. Their candid discussions about the challenges and changes they face serve as a reminder that sharing experiences can lead to empowerment and healing.
