India Achieves Milestone with Successful ULPGM-V3 Missile Test

India has successfully tested the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-Launched Precision Guided Missile (ULPGM-V3), marking a significant advancement in the nation’s defence capabilities. The test took place on March 14, 2024, at the National Open Area Range (NOAR) in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. This state-of-the-art missile is designed to engage both aerial and ground targets effectively.
The ULPGM-V3 is an upgraded iteration of the previous ULPGM-V2 and boasts a high-definition dual-channel seeker. This technology enables the missile to accurately identify and strike targets in various environments, including plains and high-altitude areas, under both day and night conditions. Notably, the missile can be controlled and retargeted even after launch, enhancing its operational flexibility.
Collaboration and Development Efforts
The development of the ULPGM-V3 was a collaborative effort involving multiple divisions of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Key contributors include the Research Centre Imarat, Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, High-Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Integrated Test Range, and Defence Electronics Research Laboratory. The drone used for the missile launch was produced by NewSpace Research Technologies, a startup based in Bengaluru.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the DRDO and its partners for the successful test, emphasizing that it underscores India’s capability to develop critical defence technologies independently. He stated, “This successful test demonstrates our commitment to enhancing our national security through indigenous innovation.”
The Importance of Defence Preparedness
In his remarks, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Chairman of DRDO, highlighted that the ULPGM-V3 and similar technologies are essential for India’s defence readiness in an increasingly challenging global landscape. He noted that these advancements are crucial for maintaining strategic advantages and ensuring national security.
The successful test of the ULPGM-V3 not only showcases India’s technological prowess but also reflects its ongoing efforts to strengthen its defence capabilities through indigenous development. This milestone is expected to bolster India’s position in the global defence arena and enhance its preparedness for various operational scenarios.
