Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public meeting in the Motihari region of Bihar on July 18, 2023, where he highlighted significant development initiatives and criticized the opposition. Speaking ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, Modi emphasized that the current government has provided more homes to residents of Bihar than the combined populations of Norway, New Zealand, and Singapore.

During his address, Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects valued at thousands of crores of rupees. He stated, “Today, I am extremely pleased to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for development projects worth thousands of crores of rupees from Motihari, Bihar. The NDA government is committed to the all-round development of the state.”

The Prime Minister praised the historical significance of the Champaran region, stating, “This land has made history. This land of the freedom movement showed Gandhiji a new direction. Now, inspired by this very land, a new future for Bihar will also be created.” He portrayed a vision of progress for the eastern states of India, asserting that they should rise alongside the country’s development efforts.

Modi outlined ambitious goals for Bihar’s future, saying, “Our resolve is that in the coming times, just as Mumbai is in Western India, Motihari’s name should shine in the East.” He called for industrial growth and enhanced opportunities in various regions, comparing them to thriving cities like Pune and Bengaluru.

The Prime Minister touted achievements under the PM Awas Yojana, claiming that more houses have been built in Bihar than the entire populations of Norway, New Zealand, and Singapore combined. He also mentioned support for local farmers, specifically those growing foxnuts, stating, “We associated Bihar’s foxnut farmers with the world after which the prices of foxnuts increased. We are establishing a Makhana Board.”

Highlighting the government’s social initiatives, Modi reported that over 3.5 crore women now have bank accounts in Bihar, and more than 24,000 self-help groups have received financial assistance. He noted that this support has enabled over 20 lakh women to achieve financial independence.

The Prime Minister reiterated that providing permanent housing for the poor was unattainable during the tenure of the Congress and RJD governments. He criticized their governance, stating, “Poor people getting permanent houses was impossible during the rule of Congress and RJD.” Modi pointed out that during the previous UPA and RJD government, only ₹ 2 lakh crores were sanctioned for development projects, in contrast to the current government’s initiatives.

Among the significant projects inaugurated was a railway development plan worth ₹ 5,385 crore, which includes the doubling of the 256-km Darbhanga-Narkatiaganj line at ₹ 4,079 crore, as well as additional railway lines valued at ₹ 585 crore. Furthermore, Modi flagged off four Amrit Bharat Express trains that enhance connectivity within the state and to Delhi.

In addition to railway projects, Modi announced road and highway initiatives worth ₹ 1,173 crore, and he allocated ₹ 162 crore to benefit 40,000 recipients of the PM Awas Yojana (Gramin). The Prime Minister also committed ₹ 400 crore in community funding for 61,500 self-help groups.

As Bihar approaches its assembly elections, expected later this year, the political landscape remains competitive. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which includes the BJP and JD(U), seeks to maintain its hold on power, while the opposition INDIA bloc, comprising the RJD, Congress, and left parties, aims to unseat Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. In the 243-member Bihar assembly, the NDA currently holds 131 seats, whereas the opposition holds 111 seats.

With the political stakes high and development promises on the table, the upcoming months will be crucial for Bihar’s future trajectory.

Congress Leader Assaulted by BRS Followers During Heated Dispute

editorial

A confrontation in Balkonda, Telangana, escalated on July 17, 2025, when N Devender Reddy, the leader of the Congress party’s NRI cell, was allegedly attacked by supporters of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA Vemula Prashanth Reddy. The incident occurred as Reddy visited the MLA’s residence to refute claims that the Congress government had failed to assist families of Gulf emigrants from Telangana.

Footage from the scene captured the moment Reddy was pursued and assaulted by a group of men until police intervened to protect him. Following the incident, Reddy condemned the attack, accusing the BRS leader of orchestrating the violence. “The attack was meant to silence the truth about the goondaism sanctioned by Vemula Prashanth Reddy, who held the roads and buildings portfolio during the BRS government,” he stated.

Background of the Incident

The altercation followed remarks made by Prashanth Reddy on July 16, where he criticized the Congress government for not taking action to support families affected by Gulf migration. In response, Devender Reddy asserted that the BRS MLA had employed “300 goondas” to intimidate his party members. “Even if he hires 3,000 goondas, he won’t be able to silence us,” he claimed.

Reddy also highlighted that his team met with Prashanth Reddy’s younger brother, presenting evidence that included data on families of 18 Gulf emigrants. He noted that a total compensation of Rs 5 lakh was provided for each life lost in Gulf countries, with 55 families in the erstwhile Nizamabad district receiving assistance. Reddy emphasized that this information demonstrated the state government’s commitment to aiding affected families.

Aftermath and Ongoing Tensions

The attack has intensified tensions between the Congress and BRS parties in the region. Following the incident, Congress leaders attempted to approach Prashanth Reddy’s residence, leading to a heavy police presence and subsequent clashes between party activists. Reports indicate that protests by BRS leaders also took place in response to the growing unrest.

As investigations continue, the situation remains volatile, with both sides exchanging accusations. Reddy maintains that the attack was an effort to suppress the truth regarding the government’s actions to support Gulf emigrants, urging for transparency and accountability.

The Hyderabad police have yet to report any arrests related to the incident, but they have identified multiple suspects involved in the altercation. This incident highlights the escalating political tensions in Telangana as the Congress party seeks to challenge the BRS’s narratives and actions.

Abandoned Doberman Finds New Home After Journey to Prague

editorial

A three-year-old Doberman, abandoned by its owner in Chromepet, India, has successfully relocated to a new home in the Czech Republic. The dog, named Pattu, was rescued and brought to the Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary (BMAD) in November 2022, where he received critical veterinary care.

Upon arrival at BMAD, Pattu faced severe health challenges, including malnourishment and difficulty walking. Shravan Krishnan, a representative from BMAD, noted that the dog required extensive treatment and physiotherapy. “We named him Pattu. After five months of treatment and physiotherapy training, he regained health. The dog is now walking normally,” Krishnan explained.

As Pattu’s health improved, BMAD initiated efforts to find him a permanent home. The organization posted his details online, attracting numerous inquiries from potential adopters across India. Ultimately, the search led to Pavilina Buskova, a resident of the Czech Republic, who expressed immediate interest in adopting Pattu.

The adoption process involved multiple rounds of screening to ensure a suitable match for the dog. Following the approval, Pattu was transferred to a private shelter in preparation for his journey. In June 2023, he was transported in a specially designed wooden crate that allowed for aeration, ensuring his comfort during the flight.

After completing the necessary customs formalities, Pattu embarked on his journey to Europe. He has since settled into his new home with Buskova, marking a significant turnaround from his previous circumstances.

BMAD’s successful outreach efforts through social media have not only changed Pattu’s life but also highlighted the importance of animal welfare and adoption initiatives. The organization’s commitment to rehabilitating animals has paved the way for Pattu’s new beginning, providing hope for other abandoned pets in need.
